Black people and MD/Partnership track at ibanks
I see a huge dearth of black people making MD/Partner. I'm already an associate at a top boutique. Of course I aspire to become an MD here. Anything I have to watch out for, like office politics etc to make sure i'm not booted out before MD consideration? Is high finance still a white man's world?
Yes, especially in IB.
so wut goes on in the board room when it comes to naming MDs? do the partners actually say "ya know jerome? hard working motherfucker, been with us since his internship days. 3rd year associate. lets drop him. he's not exactly uh, our kind"
is that the kinda talk that goes on in the boardroom? please let us know the truth - youre anonymous on the internet
..
It is very much a white man's world. Sure there are MDs that are Asian, Indian etc... but I have yet to meet a black MD, anywhere. I actually have yet to meet a black person period in banking. Same for hispanics. They just don't exist here. And I would think you'd have an uphill battle, although maybe not a visible or even tangible one.
Current head of IBD at Citigroup who was former head of M&A at Morgan Stanley
Top MD at Credit Suiise now run runs Global Infrastructure Partners
No need to name drop, just google the positions. I'm not even naming rank and file MDs.
I can keep going.....................
Had a discusion a while back on WSO that I found interesting.....a lot of this seems to be industry subsector specific. I had mentioned that I've seen very few Asian/Indian MDs, but apparently, it's very common in more technical coverage sectors. Similarly, you mention not seeing hispanic bankers, in my industry group, I've seen a ton....not uncommon at all.
None of these fuckers know what goes on, including myself.
At the end of the day, MDs are named by earnings. Everyone in this business is an economic animal and if there's a black VP/Director who's killing it, they're going to want to keep him. Where its probably manifested is in down years when people are being laid off or passed up for bonuses and in other internal politics.
The only African American's I've met in banking were analysts, and they were few and far between.
It's a white man's world at this point in history
It comes down to how much money you make the bank: you print $, you get promoted.
Good luck
Actually one of the heaviest hitters I know on the street is a black MD at a top top IB, HBS and the whole deal. He fucking whooped my ass in an interview once, good guy though, a lot of integrity. The irony of it is that he has a very very un black name so I don't think people stereotype him before they meet him, which means he can make an actual impression without a preconceived notion.
I think if you work hard your skin color will not preclude you from anything (in the US), but then again i am white and it is easy to be an optimist when you are a white male.
Wouldnt want to be black in europe though, in my experience those MFers are twice as racist as any american I know.
Go kick ass and take names
Citi's former co-heads of investment banking, Alberto Verme and Ray McGuire, were Peruvian and African American, respectively.
William M. Lewis and Vernon Jordan. Kick ass and take names. Nothing will hold you back if you're brining in the all mighty $ even if you call your boss "peeps". I let out a guffaw after repeating that to myself, wondering do people still say that?
i feel your trolling so im taking down all that info
Ive met all of those guys you just mentioned
if you made enough rain for the partners you can come into work with a solid gold grill and a clock around your neck.
GL on your quest, soul brotha. make us all proud.
not making me proud with a solid gold grill and a clock around his neck
Things not to do when you come up for MD nominations:
Use the word ain't.
Say Axe instead of Ask.
Park your 750il backwards in the parking deck.
I have two mentors (high school alumni)
One is from West Africa ( MD at Goldman in NY)
The other one is African-American ( MD at CS in NY)
I know several MDs and VPs who are originally from Latin America.
The Goldman and CS bankers told me that I should never think about race at the work place, just do a fucking good job and my work will talk for me. There will always be office politics that prevent good workers from getting promoted , but they said that my skin color should be the least of my concern.
Focus on being the best at what you do and you should be set.
Those are their words. BTW, they are very relax guys. They respond to emails and texts. Yes texts lol
this is stupid, I've seen MDs of all sorts of races, I'ts not an issue, people aren't sitting in boardrooms taking race as an issue.
Ya this isn't the 1970's
the only GS MD i know is black.. small world
Monty, i'll see your black GS MD, and raise you a GS Black Partner who is a woman! Google: Edith Cooper.
Another example at my beloved firm: Troy Dixon, MD and head of pass-through mortgage trading.
Truth be told, they are indeed few and far between, but they do exist.
Interesting: http://www.forbes.com/2007/11/26/goldman-finance-women-forbeslife-cz_le…
I've always found it impressive when women make it big in finance, but are still able to raise a family successfully. It's a tough balance.
goldman has a few more black partners on the trading floor
I've encountered plenty of people (namely women) that have triggered ill repute on my end towards them on my end do to my entrenched white kid sterotyping at first glance but come to respect do to their ability and generally being good at what they do. IB may have its favorites racially, but loves money and the people who are good at making it more.
In short, be bad ass at what you do and that'll be a huge step in your career vertical.
yeah gs trading rly likes the black guys
the issue with IBD and background is not race but social circle. If your a black kid from inglewood your connections once you reach MD level will not be anywhere near as good as the guy from Greenwhich who went to Philips Exeter. Hence your revenue generation will be nowhere as good and your not as likely to make MD.
People I personally know, not 'know of' but actually know: - Black MD at GS in Pine Street Leadership Development - Black MD, head of CS Strategic Partners - Black MD at MS IED - Black/Arabic MD at MS FID
More scattered through different firms and roles.
Do you guys think that what appears to be a current lack of diversity in senior management at top financial services firms will change given the boom in diversity recruiting and programs for Latino/Black/Hispanic/Native American students and even women or LSGB (or whatever it is).
When talking about minorities, keep in mind that they are, very obviously, a minority of the population, and thus their numbers will by default be much smaller. That and yeah, you just don't see many black people in finance. If there's an overreprestented demographics, they would be indian & asian.
