Europe Uni Tier List

new uni tier list for bb/eb ib as the last one was pretty shitty(no way in hell is Warwick on the same level as bocconi)

Tier 1a - Oxford, Cambridge, LBS
Tier 1b - LSE, HEC, Bocconi
Tier 1c- Imperial, UCL, ESCP

Tier 1d - Mannheim,HSG
Tier 2a -  ESSEC

Tier 2b - Durham, Edinburgh, Bristol, EDHEC, St Andrews, Nottingham, KCL, Bath, ESADE, UCD, Trinity
Tier 3 -  WHU, IE, SSE, Skema
Tier 4 - Other Russell Group Universities, Nova, Bayes

Tier 5 - Open University, University of East London, London metropolitan University

Tier 6 - Erasmus, Warwick

T1 = Target; T2 = Semi Target; T3 = Lesser Semi Target; T4 = Close to Non-Target;

T5 = Ridiculously Non-Target; T6 = Bottom Of the barrel, (for placement think sanitation worker/cleaner/db analyst)

Why LSE not 1a? Also LBS doesn't have an undergrad programme.

1b should be solely HEC (= the best of the non-uk schools), 1c you have the leading European unis in their own market + the UK ones: Bocconi (Italy), HSG (DACH), ESCP,  Imperial, UCL

Why is Erasmus university ranked close to non-target? Almost all Dutch investment bankers based on London are from this school, which are quite a lot if we account for the total population. It’s also rated one of europes top business schools for a reason.

Edit: there’s also a banking cycle at which all bulge brackets are present to recruit new interns. This must be for a reason

LSE is definitely tier 1a considering the amount of people that apply and successfully get top roles in finance. I went to a tory occupied uni and studied computer science and currently intern at a prop trading firm. I was shocked to see the number of LSE alumnis at my firm, even though their school don't even have computer science or engineering departments which are more ideal for prop trading and quant roles. Fair play to the LSE people, 'finance' was probably the first word that came out from their mouth when they were kids.

I believe a tiered ranking is most useful on a regional level rather than pan-European. The list provided might apply to London investment banking, but I cannot see a French office not giving preference to HEC or Sciences Po over Oxford and LBS, or Nordics taking in someone from Durham over SSE. In Germany, WHU and Mannheim, and even EBS easily beat out Imperial and UCL.

It’s the same with MBAs, you either go to HSW, because those have all the sway regardless of region; but LBS certainly gives you more of an edge if you want to become an investment banker in London, if pitted against the rest of the M7.

tl/dr: if you want to do UK, this list might be reasonably accurate, outside though, regional champions from experience outpace lesser prestigious but otherwise very decent schools.

I literally went to LSE?? Not straight Econ but nonetheless I have no agenda to shit on my alma mater. The only difference with tier 1a and 1b is that 1a can put in a lot less effort with internships/prep and still get the same placement and by proportion of people applying, they outperform us way more. I Honestly don't think I knew a single person that was in my econ-related cohort that didn't shoot off at least 1 ib app whereas I know some people who went oxbridge doing Econ that didn't care about ib at all(usually come from a family with bankers so aren't impressed by it). Congrats on Oxbridge Econ rejection though!

so true, haha LSE kids do have to work harder, no doubt and have less interesting backgrounds.

Who cares about Warwick. In fact, just for that MS you threw, I think this list needs some 'adjusting'.

University rankings depend very much on where you are. In Milan, banks prefer Bocconi to Oxford/LSE. Similarly, in Paris, banks prefer ESSEC/ESCP to Oxford/LSE.

But if we consider only London's IB, I thinking everyone could agree on the following:

Tier 1: Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, HEC, Bocconi

Tier 2: Imperial, UCL, ESSEC, ESCP, HSG

Tier 3: WHU, RSM, SSE, CBS, Nova, Warwick, Edhec, EMLyon, ESADE, IE

Tier 4: Others (Durham, KCL, Bristol, Skema, Audencia, UCD, etc.)

Okay OP's tier list wasn't great(think he got carried away with the trolling) but this is equivalently a pretty awful tier list. If an ESCP student was to see that they would vomit. Also, because youre French you probably don't know too much about the semantics of the London scene. You are significantly more likely to see A KCL/Durham/Bristol in a BB than a fucking EMLyon or IE. This is especially true for EB's.

Im going to be honest with you and tell you in advance that durham is my alma mater so that my bias is atleast known. However, it is pretty objectively obvious that it has a better placement than everything in Tier 3 except Warwick. There are BBs/Ebs which actively set quotas for the amount of durham students they take per year and the same cannot be said for some of the others in Tier 3. Durham is undisputedly the top UK semi-target(Always top 5-8 In UK rankings) and banks love recruiting from there since the grads are relatively polished due to their affluent backgrounds. ESSEC is the top continental semi-target and Durham is the top uk semi-target so im not quite sure where you are seeing such a significant disconnection?

Aren't you the same kid who said warwick was better than imperial?

Warwick kids pleaseeee for the love of god stop. You are not on the same level in recruiters eyes as lse let alone oxbridge. This delusion is unhealthy. Yes prospects keep throwing MS, the guy who's actually in ib knows less than the 2nd year reapplying for springs!
