Irish University for London IB

Currently an undergrad at an Irish uni (Trinity/UCD) and am hoping to land a summer at a BB in 2021.

I am curious to know what is the perception of Irish unis in the city and for those of you who previously interned at BBs, were there many (if any) interns from Irish unis? And if so, were they as strong as the UK/Continental European interns?

Interested in this as there are quite a few in my class keen to do IB, but it is difficult to know how we stand relative to students from top UK universities and elsewhere.

Thanks!

Unfortunately, Irish unis and students often don't tend to be viewed in the same light as European and UK uni students that go to a second-tier uni. Historically banks have recruited UK and Ireland students separately; however, in recent years, this has changed. Irish students are now judged against UK students. While on paper this seems fair, in reality it isn't. The culture of doing spring weeks and interning simply isn't as prevalent in Ireland as it is in the UK and Fr/Ger/SP/It. Irish banking students tend to have a different skill set. They tend to be quite entrepreneurial. This is probably due to Commerce/BESS/Ec and Fi having such a high standing in Irish unis and the prevalence of DUBES, I&E and C&E on campus. This entrepreneurial flare is often lost on big banks.

If you want to get into banking, I would recommend you go learn a second European language, apply for spring weeks in your second year (assuming you are a second year in a four-year degree) and do an internship in deals advisory in the Big Four.
