Networking internally - tips and stories welcomed

Hello WSOers, I am a junior at a middle office division at a middle sized bank. (I know most of you are from IB, but need sincere advice, no harsh comments pls) I don't enjoy my current role that much, and try to internally transfer to another team. Have a few teams in mind that somehow interacts with my team, and want to get to know people in that team (a VP told me this is how internal transfer works here)

I wonder who I should reach out to initially? Another junior or a VP/D/ED (who has the decision-making power)?

If the first chat goes on well, is it good to follow up every 1-2 months (with the junior)? Asking since 1 chat is probably not enough to cover my questions, really want to learn more before a formal application

Just wanted to know more about Dos and Don'ts in terms of networking internally. I'm from a different culture where things work differently, so any tips are greatly appreciated!

Start with juniors - they will happily go out for coffee and tell you about their role without them necessarily having a job. I wouldn't chase them every month or totally bombard them with 500 questions.. maybe grab lunch every 6 months and if there is a role you can ask a few more questions. Really figure out as much as you can on your own and prioritize the most important ones, it's annoying when people have a list of 50 questions

For internal postings you kind of need to wait for them to be hiring (firms usually post jobs internally for a week or so before they go up, or you can tell the juniors to let you know if they're hiring juniors anytime soon)

I wouldn't bother the seniors until there is a job for you - and then go talk to the person listed as the hiring manager internally. Then you can definitely say hi, I've talked to X and Y juniors and am very interested in the role, can we grab a coffee?
