Any way to salvage this?
I just had the unfortunate experience of trying to explain to HR why they had a copy of my resume that I was using for applying for internships, so it didn't have my most recent summer internship, my GMAT, or any of the formatting updates I made. While I am happy I got a call with a resume that looked awful, I know I didn't do myself any favors. I ended up apologizing, talking about my experience since that point, and blaming it on unfamiliarity with the site on which the resume drop occured (the truth).
Is there any way to salvage this? I don't plan on repeating this mistake, but I'm sure someone else will do this down the line.
I wouldn't worry too much. I got an interview when I sent out a cover letter with a different firms name on it. The key is they contacted you. To me that means that they were interested even without your most recent experiences.
Your resume must be pretty impressive if they called despite having an outdated resume with poor formatting. Just make sure they have the updated version now, even though you explained everything to them over the phone, and move forward. No need to bring it up again with them. Focus on selling yourself in the interview.

my friend worked two jobs during his Sophomore Summer and no jobs during his freshman summer (one internship was telecommuting for a CFA that required only 10 hours a week at night, the other was a more legit hedge fund-eque opportunity that he worked 9-5 Mon-Fri). how unethical would it be if he backdated the CFA job so his resume made more sense and he wouldn't have to explain that the CFA job was only ten hours a week and he worked it when he should have been sleeping? could he lose his junior year internship offer over something like this?
