January 2025 FT Job

I'm gonna take a finance intern from June to Sep this 2024 summer. Since I am an F1 student and will graduate in Dec, I will not have much time to stay if no return and no other jobs found. I'd like ur advice.

If I receive return offer, can I argue it to start at Jan 2025?

If I cannot have return, where and when should I find a FT job starting at Jan 2025.

Thanks guys:)

Navigating the transition from an internship to a full-time position, especially on an F1 visa, requires strategic planning and understanding of the hiring cycles in finance. Here's how you can approach both scenarios:

If You Receive a Return Offer:

  • Negotiating Start Date: It's not uncommon for return offers to have some flexibility in start dates, particularly for candidates with unique circumstances like graduating early or visa constraints. When discussing the return offer, express your enthusiasm about joining the team full-time and explain your situation. Highlight how starting in January would allow you to immediately contribute to the team without the gap that would come from waiting until the traditional start dates later in the year.
  • Leverage Your Internship Experience: During your internship, make it a point to excel and build strong relationships within the team. A strong performance can give you more leverage when negotiating your start date.

If You Do Not Receive a Return Offer:

  • Start Early: Begin your job search as early as possible, ideally while you're still interning. Utilize your school's career services, networking events, and platforms like LinkedIn to connect with potential employers.
  • Utilize OPT: As an F1 student, you're eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT), allowing you to work in the U.S. for up to 12 months in your field of study. Apply for OPT early, as processing times can vary, and having it in place by January would be ideal.
  • Target the Right Hiring Cycles: Many finance firms have specific hiring cycles, but there are also off-cycle opportunities. Look for roles that are open to immediate start dates or specifically mention January starts. Smaller firms, startups, or boutique banks might have more flexible hiring timelines.
  • Networking: Continue to expand your network in the finance industry. Attend industry events, reach out to alumni from your school working in finance, and consider informational interviews to learn more about potential opportunities.

Remember, persistence and preparation are key. Keep refining your resume, practice your interview skills, and stay informed about the industry to improve your chances of securing a full-time position by January 2025.
