Using abbreviations in applications

Should you try to limit the use of abbreviations as much as possible in cover letters, resumes and when you speak to people in the industry, or does it not matter? E.g. should I write someone works in Debt Capital Markets and the other in Equity Research instead of DCM and ER?

Does it differ between referring to titles, divisions and other stuff?
