Worried...

So I'm an engineering major at MIT, actually graduating early this semester with a high GPA. I took a lot of econ/finance classes and decided I wanted to go into finance.

Basically our career fair was 1 week ago, so I applied to a bunch of jobs this past week in investment banking/Asset Management/private equity/pwm. The main banks were GS and JP Morgan on our career bridge site, and they had us apply online on their own websites.

I'm seeing now on this site that lots of the firms are already full so I'm getting a little worried. I'm actually not applying for NYC jobs, but rather for a bunch in Texas (Houston and Dallas). Anyone have some advice/insight?

Thanks.

EngineerInFinance:
Yeah I have. I have about 12 applications out so far.

apply for at least 50 places if you are looking for FT

there are at least 100 impressive investment banks/hfs/pes/prop trading shops in total.

dont limit yourself on so few, and try international opportunities

Okay will do. I definitely was planning on applying to more, I just had focused on my top choices this week. I'll be doing a lot more this week. I'm applying to everything, from BBs to boutique firms.

Sounds like a good strategy. Depending on your interests it might make sense to check out non-investment bank areas of finance. Things like corporate finance / business development in big corporations, or energy trading at places like Vitol, Trafigura, etc.. or consulting/restructuring at Alvarez and Marsal, FTi consulting, or the plethora of buyside firms.

It depends on what you want to get into, what your interests are. With your background and Alma mater you should have a lot of options. There are a lot of people on these forums who can help you with finding out about all of these options. I'm sure your engineering options will be quite broad as well. I mean, MIT is kind of a big deal.

Good luck.
