New User Intro - UK

Hello everyone.
Id just like to introduce myself, Im from the UK and about to graduate for a target university in Engineering and Business studies. Im trying to break in to IBD however with no internships experience during uni I didn’t get anywhere with this round of FT recruiting and I can’t get on any SA programmes as I will have graduated by then.

Im currently looking for things to do this summer (until next round of FT recruiting) to boost my chances, maybe volunteering or taking CFA or GMAT.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Ive heard mixed reviews on the use of aggressive networking in UK such as cold calling and emailing, do you think it’s something I should be working on this summer? And do you think I should be trying to arrange informal interviews in London ahead of the recruiting season?

1) Cold calling is fine as long as you're not a douche about it and don't expect it to lead anywhere. Don't do what some US guys do and call everyone on a team. It only really works at smaller places where you'd call the head of the team and ask about internship opportunities.

2) Informal / information interviews - never ever use this phrase. You meet someone for coffee or a beer, nothing else. You talk a little bit of business and a little bit of social.

In general, you should definitely network but do NOT go into it with the mindset that this will get you a job or an interview. Do not be as aggressive as US people.
