Newbie here. Could use some guidance/advice
Hello everyone, second post, and I figured I would put it here. I am a Junior and I guess you could call me a special case. I have been a Psychology major my entire college career. I really don't like it anymore after 3 years and decided, that I really want to go into Finance. I couldn't change majors, as I am already three years in to school, so I figured the best I could do would be to add a Business minor, which I went ahead and did.
My question, is since I am so late into school, what are some recommendations on where to go from here with regards to internships/opportunities in the business/finance world for someone that won't even gave a Business degree? My goal is to find a job for a couple years in order to build my experience so I can apply to a top 15 business school. A family friend is high up in IBM and said she could possibly assist me in landing some kind of internship there. Will that be a sufficient place to "get my feet wet"? Thanks, and I ove the forum. Fantastic information

Step 1 is to understand that you're not a "special case" and that there are plenty of people in your exact situation, with more competitive credentials (school / GPA unless you have a 4.0), and with way better connections/OCR.
Basically, you have to build a competitive resume. You should tell us what kind of school you go to (M7, ivy, non-ivy, non-target, etc.), as well as what your GPA is like. IBM would definitely be a good place to start if you have zero internships, however it should be something related to finance (ie, don't take some random internship at IBM in operations, "business development," IT, etc). If it's not relevant, you may be better off getting an internship at an unknown boutique shop in your area.
I suggest you begin by posting your resume in the review forum, and ask for people's thoughts on what you should improve upon and how to do it. As well, research the various areas of "finance" and try to hone in on what part of the business you like - sales, research, etc.
On a final note, in regard to your situation: being a psych major and switching, you're well behind the curve. A business minor is not nearly enough to put you up to speed with everyone you'll be competing against. You may want to consider delaying graduation, doing a MSF (if that's in your scope of affordability), or switching majors altogether.
Good luck.
It really depends what kind of school you go to - and I would have to disagree with the poster before me. If you go to a liberal arts school, or a highly ranked school in general, your major doesn't that matter that much all that matters is an interest in finance and your GPA. I would join your school's investment club, pick up a few Vault guides, start reading the WSJ and begin networking with your school's alums at bulge bracket banks. It would be a good idea, however, to first learn what exactly you want to do in finance. Many people on this forum tend towards investment banking, but my personal interest is equity research. Then begin applying to internships (and soon). That being said, if you go to a non-target or have a low GPA, you may need to come up with different plans.
