Analysts / Assoc less fun these days ?
I can't believe I'm saying this and maybe I'm getting old (I'm 31), but recently at a firm offsite it hit me how boring it is to hang out with the analysts / associates at our firm and how pc they are. The MD+ are all absolute chillers and hilarious. Are the younger people awkward around me? Have I become a boomer ? Is my humor outdated ? Or is it them? Have people noticed this ?In my personal life the people I hang out with span the gamut of ages....
Maybe because the very same MDs who seem absolute chillers and hilarious would fire the said analysts / associates in a heartbeat if they say something non-PC.
It's because nowadays DEI and grades/technicals are emphasized more than pedigree/social skills/looks/frattiness for some reason. Never made sense to me why you'd hire the BIPOC/woman/LGBTQ Excel monkey when you can get a UVA frat star who's friends from boarding school can bring in $20bn M&A transactions once he makes MD.
Maybe because you hire boring soulless losers who are just really qualified to do their job and that’s it. If you actually hired people who are interesting they’d be able to take a joke
I would say it’s largely due to fearing backlash from upper management. My bank as a whole is pretty woke and they constantly remind you that offending anyone even slightly will result in your bonus getting dinged and having to go to additional trainings. My analyst class is not PC at all but our general rule of thumb is to let the vp’s and directors run their mouth first. This way we know where the line is so we don’t end up having to talk with the real enemy, HR.
That's a good strategy. Let them cross the line first, as your signal to know it's ok.
A lot of those MDs (especially at GS) were around during the old days when a lot of wild stuff had been extremely common (and is now almost mythical).
I believe that era contributed to a lot of their IDGAF behavior/attitude.
Also, these juniors have always lived during a time where everything PC is so heavily pushed; and they have been trained in life to worry about feelings, and to avoid offending with inappropriate jokes, etc.
That is the likely a reason there is such a difference between the two groups.
A lot of people nowadays might not believe a lot of what was common back then; but most has been quite mild for the last 10-15 years, especially after a lot of the lawsuits, etc.
I think that is likely a reason for those MDs to have a different (IDGAF) attitude, stemmimg from the old days.
Don’t really feel like I can be my raw self in the office. I have no chill and honestly act like an NPC when I’m in the office, otherwise I would be fired. Seniors are even more NPCish and don’t find many of them relatable. They’ve been in the corporate bubble so long, their humor is dry and personalities are cold. I was drowning in b*obluge a few months ago, and now I have to relate to constipated guys that have sold their souls for pennies on the dollar
You need to have your outlets outside of work for this exact reason.
Lockdowns caused some real permanent damage on this cohort. Give it a couple more years and I think we'll be okay
We used to be a proper country.
You jest, however it’s absolutely true that there used to be a broad unconscious sense of vitality. Now, it just seems like a race to the bottom, ironically to reap the social rewards of being the largest (arbitrarily defined) “victim”.
