NYC Renting: Hudson Yards office, but where to rent?
Am moving to NYC, office is in Hudson yards/Chelsea area.
Was trying to decide between Hells kitchen, Chelsea or Long Island City/LIC(!) for renting a studio. Thoughts on how I should choose between them? My feel is that:
Hells Kitchen:
Pros: Closer to office(~<15 mins), maybe even 10 mins if I go to south part of the city
Cons: Can be kind of dirty if closer to times square/lincoln tunnel - Farther north is better, but further
Chelsea/Hudson Yards:
Pros: Closest to office, is nicer
Cons: Is hideously expensive- $4k for a studio?
Long island city(thinking near jackson ave, court square, hunters point train stations?)
Pros: Quietest(this is somewhat important for me. I'm not antisocial, but prefer the quiet and honestly find manhattan to be a bit...much) , apartment larger, cheaper, seems to be relatively safe?
Cons: 20-30mins to office by 7 train
How important is a lack of roommates to you? I totally get the appeal of living by yourself, but sometimes (especially in NYC) it just makes more sense to find a homie or two and split up the rent. When I was in my 20's, most of my friends lived in the Chelsea/HK area and it's phenomenal. Fantastic amount of young people there, as well as great bars, restaurants, and entertainment. Granted, you can find those everywhere in NYC but just seemed like a great vibe.
While I never lived in NYC professionally (grew up right next to it) I get the notion that it can be daunting and unsafe at times. However, lemme just say - this isn't the '80s, most of Manhattan I would never consider "unsafe" for any reason. Yes, if you're doing stupid shit at 3 am then you're asking for it, but I have never felt unsafe walking alone or chilling by myself throughout the day. Using common sense and being aware of your surroundings will save you in the long run. I highly recommend you attempt to find a couple of people and look as close as you can to Hudson Yards, being able to walk to your office is a game-changer. Wish I had that opportunity, but DC does not permit that at all.
Hey,
This is something I seriously considered, but the current 2b/2b situation prices are practically equivalent to the studio prices. I get what you are saying about walking and safety, and that's definitely an option, but I think I'd like the quiet of having my own place.
TBF, I can probably shave off ~$1k a month by doing so, which is basically like an additional 20k pre tax( 12x 1 x 1/0.6), but I'm not sure that it's worth it...
Ok maybe I may be a...bit more antisocial than I suggested. Great bars and entertainment honestly have very little impact on my happiness tbh...
Yeah honestly a bit uncomfortable with a roommate that I don't know.
