POTUS in quarantine = dodging debates?

We're used to politicians pulling this kind of move pre-election in emerging a.k.a. political shit-show countries (i.e. Bolsonaro sitting out debates in '18 b/c he'd been stabbed in the stomach).

How likely do you think this is a political strategy? And for the sake of argument, how well do you think this move could work in his favor?

Unbiased answers only. You're financiers with above average IQ, answer accordingly.

I mean..... considering the amount of LIDS taken by Biden, would it really be that frowned upon for trump to do the same? Biden was on the trail for only 40% of days in September. Annoying on both ends, and you can call me optimistic, but I just don’t really see Trump faking a covid positive test to take time off. If anything, him getting covid just makes the threat of it more real to his base.

Trump getting COVID is not some gigabrain strategy to keep him out of debates. It's because he and his camp never took the virus that seriously.

That isn't to say that it may not help him in some way - both in terms of sympathy and him not embarrassing himself again on national TV again if he is forced to miss a debate - but there is a 0% chance that this is a political strategy.

What makes you say it’s 0%? When I first saw the news I thought, “Oh great he’s going to take some of whatever medicine is his favorite this week and say it cured him and the libtards are intentionally killing people, not that anyone really died anyway since it’s a hoax.” Plus it gets him out of debates, especially with the possibility of his microphone getting muted when it’s not his turn to speak.

Not saying this is absolutely correct, it could be he just got COVID from being an idiot about it, but it’s hard for me to ignore the possibility of it being a strategy.

Doubt it.

Getting COVID and halting some of his campaign only hurts him. It gives Biden more time to speak and get his message across without Trump constantly going "Radical Left" every other minute.

Also, Trump would probably want to make up for the debacle that was the first debate. Why would he ever back out of it?

From a strategy perspective, I don't believe that this was intentional. I think it's far more precautionary when you consider the health and age of both Biden and Trump. Both candidates are in their 70s, which puts them in a higher risk category than most people. There is 0% that this is intentional. And if it was, it's ridiculous to think that Trump would put his own health at risk to prove this point.

I definitely agree with CRE that this will help in some way, namely by getting sympathy and support from his base and help his campaign make the argument that folks on the left are unhinged and want him to die from this. If you don't believe me on the unhinged argument, there are tons of people on Twitter that have tweeted that they hope he dies from this. Wishing that someone dies, regardless of much you don't like someone, is a pretty shitty thing to do.

Lets not fall into the trap of assuming Trump is playing 3D chess, we have 4 years of evidence that he probably couldn't play regular chess.

He's consistently downplayed this, encouraged his staff and his supporters to engage in unsafe behavior for the purposes of his own self-aggrandizement in terms of gathering for rallies and speeches.  Given all that, why is it surprising that someone close to him got it, and then spread it to him?

As we would say with any other person who has not only acted irresponsibly, but encouraged others to do so as well - this is well-deserved karma.

Now lets see if he decides to follow his own medical advice and drink hydroxychloroquine.

It isn't a political strategy - there's no mastermind plan for him to have gotten it, or faked it, or whatever is out there. Realize that if we assume Trump is an idiotic, ego maniac the last thing he would do is get a virus or have a master plan involving that. Generally doesn't go both ways.

Could it work in his favor? Sure - I guess he could come out triumphantly and say hey, look at me! I have all the risk factors and yet i'm still fine. Open it all up - can't you see it's a hoax! Etc, etc. Assuming he doesn't have serious complications - it could embolden his base.

The flip side is, that it reinforces every notion that ever existed around his lack of empathy, unwillingness to make even a modicum of sacrifice for others and general cavalier attitude towards risk, etc.

At this point - there's no real political strategy left IMO. Who is switching sides? I mean honestly? They are out there - but I think the majority have made up their mind, one way or another. Best case scenario is he crushes it quickly, emerges from quarantine and then can sprint to the finish line, scream from the rooftops about beating the virus, fire up his base and the 'get over it - just open it all up' crowd.. and maybe that will get him just enough to edge out an electoral victory. That seems to be his best case at this point, honestly.

His reputation is so bad that people’s first reaction is there’s some conspiracy.  Wow.  In America.

Giving him way too much credit though, he and his camp are too disorganized and undisciplined to coordinate a scam like this.  Plus he thinks he won the first debate and wants more, he doesn’t ever back off and reflect....he triples down, that’s his personality.  Also, he’s down 10% in the polls and the debates were really his only chance of catching up...now there’s no hope of that.

This is a disaster for his campaign because he his whole message that people are safe has just been shattered: if he can get it, anyone can.  Plus he’s not taking chloroquine, but some experimental drug most people don’t have access to so within a day folks will be casting him as a hypocrite (and they’d be right).  Also, now the dems have time to spread their message unchallenged.  Folks may enjoy the 10 day break from full blown crazy and be even more aware of how chaotic he is when he returns.
