Wallstreetoasis makes me depressed

Seems like everyone on here is a six foot seven chad at Goldman Sachs…. While I struggle to get hireviews at accounting firms. What do I do? Where did I go wrong? I knew I should have done an arts degree, maybe that would have made me much happier….. sigh. Any tips for a career change?

Hey there, don't let the high-flying stories get you down. Remember, for every "six foot seven chad at Goldman Sachs," there are countless others working hard and facing the same challenges as you. Here's some advice straight from the WSO content that might help you pivot your career:

  1. Self-Assessment: Take a step back and assess your skills, interests, and values. You mentioned an interest in arts; could there be a way to integrate that passion into a new career path?

  2. Networking: It's crucial. Start building your professional network by reaching out to people in industries you're interested in. This includes alumni from your school, professionals on LinkedIn, and even attending industry events.

  3. Skill Development: If you're looking to switch careers, consider what skills you need to develop. WSO offers courses and certifications that could bolster your resume and make you a more attractive candidate.

  4. Experience: Gain relevant experience, even if it's not directly in the role you want. This could be through internships, volunteering, or side projects related to your field of interest.

  5. Mentorship: Find a mentor who can provide guidance, whether it's someone from the field you're interested in or a career coach.

  6. Resume and Interview Prep: Make sure your resume is top-notch and that you're prepared for interviews. WSO has resources for resume reviews and interview prep that can give you an edge.

Remember, a career change is a journey, not a sprint. Take it one step at a time, and don't be afraid to reach out for help along the way. Keep your chin up and keep pushing forward!

don’t let it get to you man. do your own thing. i used to be a person who would scroll through linkedin/wso and be filled with envy which would then lead to lower self esteem. not the best thing to do. have confidence in yourself and the idea that everything will happen in due time. learning the skill of patience and being able to think much more constructively long term is something needed not just for a career but in life. also, never forget this: comparison is the thief of joy

The FT guys at good firms aren’t spending all day and night on a job and recruiting advice forum anymore lol

It’s kind of like when you take a day off from work and walk around Soho in the middle of a Wednesday afternoon, and you realize most the people on the streets and in the stores are tourists or unemployed locals

speaking of soho on a wednesday afternoon, it's crazy how many people in their mid 20s in nyc have their parents footing all their bills. went to a house warming party recently and it turns out that like a quarter of them had no job and parents were basically giving them 10-20k a month for rent/expenses wtf???

What absurd threads must you be reading to get such a wildly ridiculous impression? And no, an arts degree would not make you happy, it would make you almost unemployable. Nut up, there's literally 1,000s of firms you could be reaching out and applying to for various roles. Life is a grind for most people in this industry and comparison is the thief of joy, so knock it off or you're just going to be miserable all the time for no good reason.

Not every post here is LARP, only maybe 70% of them are

I think this forum is a place where ppl who are bummed about their day go to read posts, only to get more bummed after reading stuff that make them feel less prestigious. Then after logging out, they go about their day again feeling less bummed out than before
