Goldman Sach RMD Asset Management - Dallas
I have an interview set up for GS's RMD Asset Management. I am wondering if someone can talk to me about their culture, lifestyle, hours, base+bonus (Associate level), exit opps/promotion opportunities, etc..
I know they recently switched offices to Downtown Dallas. I've seen talk on older threads about growth for RMD but also being absorbed by other groups? I'd like to set the record straight as to this groups future...
Asset Management is going to be the bread and butter of the Dallas office with NY and LA handling acquisitions. The job descriptions they put make it sound like its a bit of both, but its misleading. I've known some people that have worked there and it seems love/hate.
A majority of the senior leadership at the office is legacy Archon employees and that seems to cause somewhat of a cultural riff. The youngins approach the job as IT'S F@#$KING GOLDMAN SACHS BABY LETS DO THIS!!, whereas the senior employees are looking at Waze to see how long it will take their Toyota Highlander to travel up the tollway to Plano as its their day to pickup the kids. This results in somewhat of a Paris Syndrome at the office and attributes to high turnover.
Overall structured finance and AM are the groups to work for at the office. Hours for AM are the typical cyclical amount ranging from 40hrs to weekends depending on reporting requirements. Not sure on Associate level comp.
Thank you. That's good info.
Can you talk about why some people love it vs. why some hate it?
When I think of GS culture I think of it as more cut throat/competitive/really long hours/etc. Pretty much the epitome of NY finance. From your description of the former Archon employees it seems like they are more laid back/family orientated/communal/etc.. Is this where the Paris Syndrome effect is coming from? Young employees join thinking its going to be like GS NYC and they leave considering it's not that?
Yeah pretty much. People will go into the job thinking its NYC and you will have a boss with 4 Ivy League degrees, when in reality your boss is a suburban mom that went to UT Arlington. That kills the spirit of some.
The GS name obviously carries the weight. But if you can get in to Hillwood or Trammel Crow (not CBRE) in Dallas I would make that my first choice.
