Tuition Reimbursement Clawback

Hi all,

I recently switched jobs and was offered tuition reimbursement at my previous company. I used it to audit some non-degree classes I thought would be interesting knowing that I must stay for 1 year after receiving the benefit, which I did not.

Do companies really come after people for this money back (around 5k)? I imagine it depends on the company, but my only point of reference is a friend who quit his analyst stint 8 months in and didn't pay back his signing bonus. The bank basically wrote him strongly worded letters for a few months then dropped it. Any horror stories out there to contrast this?
