PWM Cold Calling Etiquette
I'm a freshman looking for a summer internship in private wealth management.
I've complied a list of 20+ PWM branch offices in my general area. I have a phone # for each and a branch mangers email for a few.
What is the best way to go about securing an internship? Would you recommend I send some emails first, asking if any there are any internship opportunities available? Or would it be better to just call the branch and ask whoever picks up the same question?
Don't want to seem like some kid begging for a job, even though that is essentially what I am, I guess...
Just say
'Hi my name is __________ and I was hoping to get in touch with someone regarding internship opportunities.'
And go from there. The most important thing is that you keep it brief and to the point.
same question. does anyone have any advice about this? i keep getting transferred to voicemail and no one calls me back
Ive also gotten transferred to voicemail a few times. I got 1 call back out of 4 or 5 voicemails. I'm going to call back the places I left voicemail to about 4-5 days later. Diligent, but hopefully not irritating.
Don't sound too analytic or demanding because, after all, it is PWM. You will be doing BO work. This is from experience... not downplaying the gig at all.
who do we ask to talk to when we call the branch? what do we do if we get transferred to voicemail?
ML PWM through cold calling? (Originally Posted: 07/23/2010)
I was speaking to an upcoming junior at my school and he told me as a freshman he cold called ML NY, somehow got a hold of a VP there, and though it was in July (as opposed to formal recruiting in January/February) he was able to land an internship there. I believe he mentioned it was unpaid.
He's now working at a NYC boutique doing M&A (no idea if it's paid or not) and he's a sophomore! This boutique internship was through networking, but I didn't even know this shit was possible.
Have any of you guys had success with that? I didn't expect it would be possible to even land an internship as a freshman or sophomore. Any tips you guys would have to land an internship as a freshman/sophomore?
Yes. UBS freshman year
There are quite a few programs out there for fresh soph to get in, but the key is to get ahead of the curve through networking ahead of time.
this is very possisble, my first internship was at ml pwm and it was my soph yr. i saw the posting and called the guy just saying i am interesting in learning more about the internship...just pitch urself and it will work. yes, it was unpaid, yes will have nothing to do with M&A but use it as a first step internship
