Anyone else feel this way?

So I just recently started getting into the whole networking thing (I'm a fucking IDIOT for waiting this long, but thats another post entirely) and I've been taking the whole "Can you tell me how you got to where you are" approach. We then proceed to talk for ~25 mins about literally nothing I dont already know from spending so much time on this site (CFA, MBA, exit opps, sectors, BO vs FO, blah blah blah). I find myself literally pretending to be learning shit from these guys so that the conversation will continue flowing smoothly. Like I'm only talking to these guys for the line "send me over your resume later and I'll see what I can do" to be said at the end of the call. Unfortunately the only way to get there imo is to act like you've been extremely enlightened throughout the conversation, lol.

So anyway, does anyone else feel the same way? Like you're just playing dumb the whole time so these guys can get the kick out of "imparting wisdom" and consequentially ask for your resume. Or am I doing something wrong here?

P.S. I really hope this doesn't come off as douchy cuz that isn't my intention at all. Believe me, I truly do appreciate these guys taking the time to speak with me. It's just that all these questions get answered ad nauseum here daily. Hell, these phone calls would have left me enlightened as shit if only they were made 2 years ago, lol.

Yeah I always feel this way. Honestly, networking is all about trying to gain some insight about the firm from the MD/VP/Analyst. Just ask insightful questions, get their advice, follow up on the advice and make an impression. Work up to getting your resume in their hands. It will feel cumbersome to keep doing this and it will be boring hearing some stories over and over and similar backgrounds but worthwhile

Success is my only option and failure is not

THIS. same way a stripper will tell you everything you want to here, boost up your ego and give her what you want, $. NO she dsnt actually like you and you probably dont like these bankers other than for recruitment reasons because if you did, you would have been talking to them 2 years ago like you said when recruitment wasnt near

anyways, stroke their cocks...i mean egos, as much as you can and ask for advice even if you have asked it 9870982354273459087 times before so they feel useful and that they can share wisdom upon us monkeys

then, and only then, (if you just met the guy and have no other connection or relation) will he really try to help you as a mentor/mentee role.

hope this helps and that you dont have an immediate gag reflex :)

I went through the exact same problem during recruiting, Until I figure out how to get around this.

Personally, I always ask "What can I do to position myself for a group similar to yours?" As he mentioned about his team and what they like to see, I always bring up what I have done so far. Remember to treat all the informational interview as real interview. If you demonstrated throughout the conversation that, You can work effectively within their group, People will start asking for the resume.

If you feel like the guy on the other side of the phone, likes you, Just go in for the kill and ask for a freaking interview. If you don't, other people will. By default, you will get a "NO", until you ask for it.

"I am the hero of the story. I don't need to be saved."

Try to read up on the recent deals announced by the firm of the person you're speaking with. Ask about them. Demonstrates that you've done your homework on the company and have an interest in the work. Also, if they worked on the deal, it gives you a chance to learn something you probably didn't know reading this forum. Extra points for being able to ask incisive questions about the project.
