How hard is it to get into IBD as an international?
Hey everyone! How hard is it to get into IBD as an international student? Is it extremely hard like some fields such as medicine, or is it more forgiving and accepting such as law? Are companies generally willing to sponsor visas for international students to work as analysts, etc.? What about internships during the school year, is the process of obtaining those any different? Thanks for your time and help.
(P.S. I'm sorry if this has been asked before but I tried searching and it was giving me thousands of posts about interns as opposed to internationals.)
haha wait is it hard for internationals to get into medicine? because I feel like there are so many already i dont know how thats possible. there's already a lot of internationals in ib, i guess maybe because there's 6.5 billion internationals for limited postions
Yea, for only 10.6% of internationals got accepted to med schools across the entire US is 2013. Most med schools don't even allow out of state residents to apply, much less international students (only about 60 accept internationals). And most that do accept international only accept 1 or 2 per year if so much. But that's besides the point, this is IB, not med :) When you say there's already a lot of internationals in IB, do you think that maybe being an international is not that much of a disadvantage then?
It is extremely difficult to get into IB as an international - maybe you have a shot from a top target school, but probably not much of a chance otherwise. I'd say zero chance out of undergrad if you're not studying in the US
Thanks for the reply. I definitely would not be thinking of doing undergrad outside of the US. When you say top target, just how "top" are we speaking of? Are you speaking of HYPSW only?
Best guess, yeah basically. If you do other ivy league etc maybe you have a shot but someone else may be able to speak to that more - I'm not sure if that's true.
Why would they hire someone from a non-target or lower ranked target if they have to sponsor visas etc., when they could just as easily hire others equally qualified for the job without the hassle of Visa sponsorship? For them to hire you, you'd better be brilliant and they'd better love you - easier to accomplish from a top target.
Best guess is that you have essentially zero chance from a non-target, doable from a top target, and somewhere in between for schools in the middle.
I completely disagree with this. BBs are well known for hiring international students, and if they state that they don't discriminate based on nationality (which many do), they are legally not allowed to discriminate against someone's citizenship status. There were many internationals at the BB where I interned - some went to targets, and others did not. Half of the interns from my school at my firm (in IBD, S&T and research) were international students.
Sure, it'll be difficult if you're not a great candidate and have to look at smaller firms, because these are less likely to sponsor visas. And it could be harder to recruit without having a strong network and with an accent and so on. But BBs, along with major consulting and tech companies, are some of the few companies that do actually sponsor international students. Banking is nothing like medicine in this respect.
sorry for hijacking the thread i am an international student studying in a west coast target how likely is it to land a job in my home place (one of the asia financial hubs) are those interviews conducted in west coast offices instead of offices in my home country? or are they conducted in ny office? many thanks!

bump........
the higher the better. To be safe, above 3.8. I've seen an article about it at M&I. Someone made it to BB. Also depends on your English skills...
If you have a valuable language skill that they are seeking, then that will help. Otherwise, not a very good chance for working at a US based office for IBD.
But some of the banks do global recruiting, so you could interview in the US but for a position in your home country or continent.. once you are in the door, ask for a transfer to a US office.
Good luck..

You cannot really quantify/qualify the perfect candidate. Some people have gotten BB jobs with GPAs less than 3, some rejected with 3.5+.
Just network hard and prepare to the best of your ability.
Typically, you will want some EC involvement (finance club), competitive GPA (3.5+), and some networking.

Thank you! But will it be harder as an international student rather than a domestic student?
Can applicants with Foreign Credentials get into I-Banking? (Originally Posted: 02/13/2007)
Thanks in advance to anyone who can give me some feedback on my question.
My situation is that I'm originally from Houston, but moved to Sydney, Australia after high school and attended The University of Sydney. I graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance/Accounting and a Bachelor of Arts. I currently work in an oil/gas firm in Houston as an accountant and want to know your opinion on my prospects for I-Banking post-MBA and any suggestions on what I should do to better my chances. How will banks view the undergraduate foreign credential? Please keep in mind that my grades are distinction and high distinction (both considered A's in the USA grading system).
By the way, I could not do summer internships in Australia because I wasn't a permanent resident or Australian citizen, I feel this screwed my chances from the outset.
My opinion is that I probably need to get into a top MBA program to have a shot for any investment bank?
Thanks.
i think you have a pretty good chance. with a high distinction average, most places will at least take a look at you. pm me.
Apply as non-US citizen (Originally Posted: 11/07/2009)
Hi,
After having dealt with first applications in the US (I-Banking) I wonder if it is feasible for foreigners to get a job. Does anyone have successfully applied in the US as non-US citizen? Also, do you have any hints for the application and visa process?
Thanks a lot!
They have to sponsor your H-1B Visa
Is that the only way? Do they ever do so?
PM me
I've similar question. I'm currently thinking about getting my degree in Master in Finance from Hult University in San Francisco in hoping to plan s stepping stone to get a job in the states. If you can give me any advice that would more than appreciated. Thank you
You guys aren't serious, right?
Have you ever heard of CPT or OPT? I suggest you contact your college's international student office. They have to have material on these issues. If they don't, ask your career guidance office. Probably both of these offices have basic information about the immigration issues you might face.
As a rule of thumb, freshman programs are almost exclusively for US citizens and US residents (unless you are able to network your way into them). It gets a lot easier your second year and you should be able to work closely with alumni and take advantage of OCR. In your last summer, you "just" have to make sure that you are a little ahead of any US applicants, but your international background should help. Unless you fall into a stereotype or are a nerd. Just my $.02
Full disclosure: I am currently a junior at a LAC.
How likely is it for international students to get a finance job? (Originally Posted: 04/28/2013)
Hi, I am considering different options of colleges. So far, Northwestern (with its Kellogg CPU) sounds the best for me academically, socially, and professionally.
So now, how likely is it for an international non-US citizen to get a finance job out of a target school like Northwestern? I was considering applying to MMSS and am definitely following the Kellogg CPU track.
These finance jobs may include consulting(MBBB or others) and BB.
Thank you!
Are you looking to get an H1b visa, or whatever the hell it is that international students need to work here? You'll only find that with big companies, so if you do wind up applying and getting in, remember than if you can't break into a field in finance that you like, keep another corporate position at some big company in mind
What are "big companies?" Big companies like Deloitte as opposed to Booz? It will be awesome to start at the consulting department at Deloitte and go into MBA.
As mentioned by Mitt Romney, look only at biggest companies. They are the only ones sponsoring H1B visas. I wasted too much time looking at more local firms and in the end realized they don't sponsor visas for international students. Do your research.
Big Companies such as Deloitte, E&Y, Accenture? BB companies are big. I know most financial companies sponsor H1B visas. The question is, will they choose me, a Northwestern undergrad graduate with a Kellogg certificate, over other American counterparts?
Best City to Get Hired as a Foreigner (Investment Banking) (Originally Posted: 07/25/2014)
Hello mates, Could someone, who has some insight, name top cities for foreigners to get hired ? All opinions are appreciated.
London (only place where you can apply your English skills - obv. NY you would have to go to top, top uni in states.) However, that being said as long as you have domestic language skills of that country Frankfurt, Paris or any other hub could work too.

I currently have F-1 student Visa. Would it be really hard to get into banking if you are not a US citizen or a resident?
Is sponsoring working Visa a serious trouble for firms?
If got the balls and can beat the competition, all major banks will sponsor visa for incoming analysts and associates classes. Smaller banks are less willing to do it for you. I am an international student as well so I went through the exactly same shit. It is not easy but it is do-able.
