Applying to places that rejected you for an internship
Title pretty much says it. At a target with some prior IB experience as an intern. Didn't make it to or past the super day with a couple of big names I'd like to apply to for FT recruiting (JPM, Evercore, Goldman etc.).
Generally, how is this perceived by the firms? Assuming you've maintained or made some new connections and have internal advocates. Is it a total waste of time? For one of the firms I think I genuinely just misunderstood a technical question but otherwise had good responses for the fit questions. Obviously I feel I'm in a much more competitive position now having gone back and thoroughly prepared for FT interviews.
Is HR just going to look up my old application, see that I didn't make the cut, and tell me to get lost? Obviously I'm applying to a ton of places, so the less time I waste on dead ends the better. Each firm I'm looking at I'm reaching out to multiple alumni, meeting for coffee, traveling to and from the offices etc. If there's no chance of getting through the interviews I'd rather spend that time on places I have a clean slate.
Nothing wrong with applying for FT if you got denied for an internship, especially since you mentioned you are more of a competitive applicant now. What are the chances that that the same analyst or HR from before screens your resume again this time? You should def try reaching out to your contacts within the banks again and inquiring about opportunities, chances are you might interview with a diff group within the bank who have no idea/dont care that you interviewed there before.
The fact that you have already tried for the internship and are back now for FT shows a level of perseverance and commitment to the firm. Also, the big takeaway is that you failed (not getting the internship) and have taken steps from that to learn and better prepare yourself for FT interviews.
Many people I know who didn't get the internship got the FT offer the following recruiting season. I would definitely apply again, especially if you've maintained and gained contacts.

possibly. they might remember you. in my opinion, they dont give interviews to people they interviewed before. so say they rejected you for an interview for SA, they most likely will reconsider you for FT.
That's true, the SA interviews that I had and were unsuccessful, I did not get the same interview again for FT.. weird, never thought about it before
If it was only a first round phone interview then you might still get considered FT. If you made it to superday and got rejected then most probably not.
This is not true at all. I got rejected at a company twice, and got an offer the third time around. They don't hold 21 year olds to extremely high standards. Maybe if you really messed up in the interview, and were rude and arrogant, then you might not get multiple chances...

Sort of struck out with SA recruiting, ended up at a small boutique near my school (pros and cons to this for sure).
I had a superday in NY with a firm that I really liked (solid but probably not elite MM). I did mediocre/ok in the interviews and I figured that probably was not going to cut it since I was coming from a non-target (and was correct, did not get it).
Should I bother networking with people at this firm for a FT spot? I was going to reach out to people at different offices in different cities but didn't want to waste my time when I could be reaching out to people at a different bank.
Hell, I'll even retry for NY but don't want to waste my time or the banker's time that would theoretically be helping me/pushing my resume. I know some companies make you wait 1 year before reapplying but wasn't sure how banks worked.
