I honestly don't know what the GOP wanted out of this. If anything, Obama gave them more than he ever had to. The tax rate increases on income are minimal with an incredibly high ceiling relative to the income of virtually all working Americans (incuding the vast majority of folks in finance), cap gains and dividend tax rates are only at 20%...and that's locked in from here on out.

The GOP had zero leverage and still got things it wanted. To hear random GOP reps whining about the bill makes me laugh. Do these clowns not know how a negotiation works? Were they aware of the sorts of tax rate increases we were looking at if no deal was made?

Let's just say no deal had been made. Obama has his inauguration speech coming up. He could literally use a speech that has more viewers than any State of the Union speech and gets TONS of coverage to blame huge tax hikes on the GOP. He honestly gave the House Republicans a gift.

Zero leverage? They could have allowed us to go off the "cliff" which probably would have benefited the country in the long term.

Dems fucked up. Tax increases were de minimis. And they still have the Dems hostage with the debt ceiling.

They should just demand serious cuts to entitlements and if they don't get it do not raise the ceiling.

The rich are paying their "fair share" or whatever that childish and nebulous statement means. Now it is time to tackle the real issue, over spending on entitlements by a nanny state government.

And Fuck you Harry Reid. Asshole.

I wanted us to go off the cliff, it would basically force us to fix the problems we've brought upon ourselves.

re: the debt ceiling. Isn't it a little ridiculous because:

1.) They already passed the bills that require the debt ceiling to be lifted. If anything, they should pull this shit during debates on bills and just shut down the government. Instead, they are passing bills on credit and then refusing to pay the bills after they've already gotten their goodies.

2.) Entitlements play a role, but so does absurd defense spending. These assclowns rant and rave against stimulus spending to create jobs, but won't touch defense spending, which is insanely bloated stimulus spending.

Well I think you will see the Dems counter with some defense cuts, which will be the political cover for social spending cuts.

You could do $50B off defense and $50B off social spending. Not enough, but $1T over a decade sounds sizable in the news.

TNA:

Ah, but see that's the beauty of the "fair share" argument. The rich will never really pay their "fair share", because that "share" just keeps changing. I guarantee you Obama or other Dems are going to continue to say that the rich still aren't paying their "fair share", since they didn't get all they wanted out of them this time around. It's the perfect argument, as most of the their base will never be classified as "rich", and thus won't see their "fair share" go up, will continue to vote for it.

TheKing:

I agree that alot of the "defense" spending is wasteful, but I don't see it going away soon. During these times of economic distress, political tensions rise for very little reason. Iran/Isreal, China/Japan, hopefully these don't escalate but if they do, daddy America will step in. Not that I think we should be world police, but it's likely that we would intervene, and you can't do that with a gutted defense budget.

Besides, defense spending is $700 billion a year, and to an extent has controllable future spending levels. Spending on social welfare programs is twice that much, and we have an estimated future liability in the tens of trillions. It's far easier to make small to moderate changes to those than to slice the defense budget in half.

All I want is some spending cuts. I'd even settle for deduction elimination since the tax code spends nearly what we pay and frankly, is why only 50% pay Fed taxes.

Just make the 1st $30K in income tax exempt and have maybe child tax credits for one/two kids for lower income people. Everyone else pays a progressive income tax with no deductions.

Yes!

I'm even open to it being phased in so that people who have had a certain level of deductions all their lives can continue to have them.

I honestly believe that people under the age of 30 are far more willing to make sacrifices and live within our means than any of the baby boomer clowns that fill most of Congress.

Agree. Never happen though since politics is about being elected, not serving this country. Deductions get you votes and a simple system, while fair and easy to understand, won't get votes.

If you want to start electing winners you need to cut this attitude. Christie is gonna roll in 2013 all the way to 2016 contention and you're angry because he doesn't have a life size Barack Obama doll hanging from the ceiling of his basement. Remember, Rick Santorum vs the democratic nominee will be an even bigger rout than 2008. If that's what you want, keep thinking the way you're thinking.

And if it makes you feel better, Romney would have lost without Hurricane Sandy.

PRIVACY POLICY

The Company recognizes that you are concerned about privacy. We are committed to preserving your privacy and safeguarding your sensitive information. The following statement describes the general information-gathering and usage practices of our sites.

Our staff, contractors, Internet service providers and others involved in this site follow this policy or similarly strict policies regarding your Information.

Disclosure

The Company is committed to fully disclosing our policies regarding the collection, use, maintenance, disclosure and security of personal information obtained from users of our site. The term "personal information" includes a name, address, email address, or any other information which could be used to contact you directly or to identify you personally.

Use and Disclosure Limitations

The Company only uses personal information about its Web site users for specific purposes. We do not share user information with third parties except when we have told users about the disclosures, when we have prior consent, or when required by law.

Use Policy: When the Company gathers personal information from users, we ask for permission first. We also disclose, at the time of collection, how the information will be used by us. Personal information is used for activities such as auto-completion of commonly-used forms and helping us contact you when you solicit information from us.

Disclosure Policy: We do not normally disclose personal information to anyone outside of the Company unless we have previously informed users about the disclosures. However, some data may be used from time to time by outside contractors, including auditors or consultants, to assist us in carrying out necessary financial or operational activities. These uses will be consistent with this privacy policy and all contractors using this potential personal information must agree to safeguard it, to use it only for the authorized purpose, and to return it or destroy it upon completion of the activity.

The Company might be required to disclose personal information in response to a valid legal process such as a subpoena, search warrant or court order.

Although unlikely, it is possible that we may have to make certain disclosures to ensure the security of our Web site, to protect its integrity, or to take precautions against potential liability. In any of these situations, we will take any reasonable steps to limit the scope of the data disclosed.

Web Logs: The Company maintains standard Web logs that record basic information about visitors to our Web site. These logs contain: * The Internet domain from which you came to our Web site. * Your IP address. An IP address is a series of numbers which uniquely identifies your connection to the Internet. Although it is possible in some instances, certain types of IP addresses may be used by interested persons to identify users but we do not attempt to identify users in this way. * The type of browser (e.g., Internet Explorer or Netscape) and operating system (e.g., Windows 98) you use. * The date and time you visited the site, and the pages you saw.

We use Web log information to design our Web site, identify popular features, and in similar ways. We do not try to identify individuals from Web logs or to link Web logs to other user information. However, if someone tries to damage our Web site or use it in an unauthorized or illegal way, we may share Web log information with law enforcement agencies. The Company may provide aggregate information such as the number of users who visit particular pages of the site, or the number of people who link to certain external sites from our site, to other parties.

Changes to Privacy Policy

The Company's features and services will change over time and our information-gathering practices and policies may also change.

While our philosophy of protecting user information from inappropriate uses and disclosures will not change, this policy will be updated occasionally to include any change that materially affects the collection, maintenance, use, or disclosure of personal information.
