Off tread, but since you are at it, could you look up PE / VC funds?
Thanks!
The list is diversified financials-it includes some banks (Craig-Hallum) and PE/mezz (Pine River, Wayzata) funds in there.
List is CapitalIQ.
Whitebox and Blackriver (Cargill) are the best funds in that list. Pine River was recently profiled in Bloomberg magazine as a top performer in 2010. Really interesting back story on the founder. I couldn't find the specific article but this is somewhat interesting:

Buy-Side Minneapolis (Originally Posted: 01/13/2011)
Hey everyone. Do any of you have information on buy-side firms in Minneapolis? I did a search on the forum, but couldn't come up with much.
I'm currently a junior studying finance looking for a summer internship. I'd like to try to go directly to the buy-side out of undergrad and figured my best bet would be in research. The reason I'm drawn to the buy-side is because I'm very interested in value investing (not trying to stir the pot) and feel it offers me the greatest opportunity to learn and practice the value strategy. I'm not very concerned about exit opps; I figure they come with time, great performance, and a strong network more so than a chosen path.
The school I attend has a very strong alumni network. I'm hoping one of you can point me in the right direction and I can network my way to an interview. Any advice on how to reach out to buy-side firms would be great as well. I've been networking over the last four months, but recently hit a wall. Most of my network has been built through informational interviews. Maybe I haven't been direct enough in my approach; ie. actually saying "I'm looking for a summer intnership" in my cold-calls/emails.
It would also be great to know if there are positions besides research at a buy-side firm that may be more easily attainable.
Thank you!
Look into Wayzata. They are a well known distressed debt fund based in Minneapolis.
Also Norwest, they are a Wells Fargo backed fund based in Minneapolis as well.
Most of the buyside people I know in Minneapolis (from MN originally) cut their teeth elsewhere (often NY or Chicago) and like buyside people everywhere started on the sellside.
There are a few different banks with research arms in Minneapolis (RBC springs to mind) and those are probably your best bet.
There are also a decent number of buyside firms (in addition to what was mentioned above): TPG Credit Whitebox Several mutual fund companies as well
