Career Advice (Mentor is MIA)

My training manager assigned a mentor to me, but that mentor doesn't seem to be taking it seriously. I've reached out three times now and haven't gotten a response.

Q: Should I request a new mentor, find my own when I get there, or should I call the current mentor and add a little pressure?

wtf? Mentors aren't assigned, you need to find your own mentor in life, regardless of whatever shit corporate policies your company has.

You're born, you take shit. You get out in the world, you take more shit. You climb a little higher, you take less shit. Till one day you're up in the rarefied atmosphere and you've forgotten what shit even looks like. Welcome to the layer cake, son.

Mentors have been assigned at my company automatically. I understand the merit of finding my own, and I will. However, I don't know what circumstances (nor have I dealt with this before) she is under. I don't want to accidentally insult or "tell on" a mentor as I have to work with her for a while.

If you will have to work with her you definitely don't want to complain about it, that will just piss her off. Maybe she is really busy or something. Regardless of why she hasn't gotten back to you, I'd probably wait till you I got to the company to speak with her if she doesn't respond to any of your requests by then.

thanks, I think I might just gauge her interest at a 1-on-1. If she seems too busy or just not able to commit mentally, then I'll just covertly find another without necessarily cutting ties with her as official

My experience has been that mentors tend to offer up their time as a checkmark for "giving back to the firm" -they don't have a serious interest in actually mentoring. Find your own mentor when you get there

thanks LAWM. I was thinking that's my best route, and now that I know corporate mentors are just going through the motions (more or less, I will look elsewhere

Can't tell if serious...

Mentor programs run at the corporate level are a joke. Don't get worked up about it. That being said, the person is a douche for signing up for a mentor program and not returning your calls. Definitely do not over pursue this though, you'll come off looking bad.

I have to know: what pressure did you plan on exerting on your mentor?

ok, so "pressure" was not the appropriate word. I just meant something more than 1 phone call attempt and 3 emails (one of which was to grade one of my reports before the final presentation that she didn't do)

Background: I interned in the office but at opposite sides of the floor from her. We hardly talked during my time there
