Are you planning on staying
Are you planning on staying in the UK post graduation? The Oxford name alone will get you interviews to all the banks here. The degree is irrelevant, even a poetry graduate from Oxford would stand a better chance compared with most non Oxbridge graduates. Best of luck and congrats on the fantastic offers!
Ovechkin08: Are you planning
Are you planning on staying in the UK post graduation?
I am not completely sure. I am exploring options to work in the US after graduation. Currently, it seems the most common route is to get to one with both US and london office and try to transfer. I am still researching possibilities of applying straight to US.
A friend of mine did
A friend of mine did Engineering at Cambridge and was offered the chance to do a year abroad at MIT. I would imagine Oxford do a similar thing if you are worried about name recognition. Either way Oxford will still be recognised in the US. Why do you want to go to the US if you don't mind me asking? I agree that the easiest way to get to the US is via working in the London office of a global bank and moving over after a few years.
Ovechkin08: Why do you want
Why do you want to go to the US if you don't mind me asking?
I was told that overall the living experience in US will be better due to cheaper housing. In addition, having close relatives there is also a pull factor for me. And correct me if I'm wrong, I'm under the impression that a lot of the action is at US&Asia more than it is at UK.
I'm not from the UK but I
I'm not from the UK but I live here now and work in London. The US can be cheaper if you choose to work outside of New York. The problem with the UK is that if you want to work in finance you have to be in London. This can be a real pain as London is very expensive.
As far as finance goes, although this is very much a US focused forum, London is on par with NY and some would even argue that given its location between Asia and the US it has a slight advantage. Any and every bank, fund manager, PE firm, CTA, etc has an office here and the place is rolling in petro dollars from Russia and the Gulf. I have never worked in the US so I am biased but I think many people on this forum, who are mostly still in school/college, don't appreciate just how big London is as a centre for financial services.
