Did I not get the job?

So I was put on hold after a superday last week. Yesterday I found out that the person they made an offer to rejected the offer. So I followed up with the firm to see what their timeline is like, and they said that they'll be making final decisions today (yesterday). Since it is now today and I haven't heard from yet, does it mean that I didn't get the job?

Clearly not a good sign that you haven't heard anything. But decision making committees miss deadlines all the time and it can be difficult to wrangle all the right people together to re-make a decision if someone rejected an offer.

They'll likely reach out to their #2 choice within a day, but #2 may have an offer elsewhere or need time to decide. If you aren't #2, it can still end in your favor but they aren't going to call you back to say they made someone else an offer and now need to wait back to get their answer.

You should prepare for the worst (or no response) and hope for the best.

It's now past the day that they said they would get back to me by...should I follow up again? I think they would tell me if the spot has already been filled..
