1) Search
2) Corporate = mostly lending to smaller-midsized companies, cross-selling other banking products. Investment banking = medium to large sized firms, advice on mergers and capital-raising (debt, equity). Other advice re: corporate finance and strategic transactions such as spin-offs etc.
3) Possible to switch but an uphill battle; still, happens. Corporate better lifestyle, worse pay.

'Corporate Banking' vs. 'Investment Banking Division' (Originally Posted: 09/28/2015)
For the online applications of many bulge brackets, when choosing the division one wishes to apply to.....there are various options, none of which is 'investment banking'.
For example, with Barclays there is 'Banking' and 'Corporate Banking'.
If I want to do investment banking, which one of these should I be applying to?
My apologies for the baseness of the question.
if you're applying online you're wasting your time. talk to people who work there, OCR, etc.
Barclays IB is just called "Banking"... They changed it just this year, and yes, it's very confusing
Corporate Banking housed with Investment Banking at BB (Originally Posted: 03/06/2014)
Can anybody comment on the typical compensation at the Associate level? Would experience in BB IB usually be recognized when moving over to the CB side at a different BB bank, meaning transition would occur at the same level (i.e., IB Associate 2 to CB Associate 2)?
I've never heard of anyone coming straight in as an AVP (CB associate), though a couple guys with several years experience in real estate came as third year analysts.
From my limited knowledge, I've never seen someone from IB move into CB, usually the reverse. But I would imagine if you have the right contacts, reviews, performance, etc. you should be able to keep the experience. However, the pay will be drastically lower in terms of bonus. I would imagine more than a 50% cut in bonus.
Salaries: Analyst 70/80/90 Associate 95/125/150/175 Bonus ~50%-100% As you can see, salary does not differ. Depending on firm performance, bonus won’t either. This is an annoying misconception that corporate banking and classic banking pay differs.

The M&I article had a moderator note pointing out that the pay was the same for base but bonus was more for IB. This can be confirmed by the WSO Company Database.
