Energy Sector Primer
Hi everyone,
I recently searched previous threads regarding a primer for oil & gas companies, but was not able to find anything other than a few posts from 2013, where members sent primers through PMs. I have done some preliminary reading and understand basic concepts (NAV for E&P is popular, PV 10 as the discount rate, etc...), but want to more thoroughly understand and eventually build models for some companies I am interested in.
Does anyone have a primer or reading recommendation for someone looking to learn how to model for oil & gas companies?
check macabus.com
The DB Oil and Gas Primer is a good read.

Thanks everyone. Will give these a read this week.

The only thing I've read is Deutsche Bank's Oil & Gas primer (is that what you are referring to?), but I only have a tangental interest in the sector.
You can google it, or download it here: http://prawo.uni.wroc.pl/pliki/8381

Nice find!
Trading Natural Gas is still the standard. I also like "Energy Trading and Investing" which is newer and has some stuff on NGLs and LNG.
Energy Trading and Investing is really good. Assumes very basic knowledge of the Energy markets and goes into quite a lot of detail.
I'm a bit late to the party, but there's a relatively recent book that came out called "Natural Gas Trading in North America". By far the best resource I've found for learning about natgas.
Energy Interview Primer (Originally Posted: 08/17/2012)
Hey WSO,
Does anyone know some good online resources I can look at for learning more about energy in advance of a full time interview with an industry group? In particular, anything relevant to financial valuation (i.e. industry specific metrics) or anything else that would be helpful to someone doing a FT energy interview who is a relative rookie.
pm me, i got a couple of pdfs that might be helpful
I'd be interested in some materials as well, smalleights, if you still have em
Would you mind PMing those to me as well? Thanks.
I'd also be interested if you still have those materials on hand
hi, would you mind pming me those resources if you've still got them and if it's not too much trouble? i stumbled across this thread rather late, apologies in advance.
As would I - appreciate it!
Could you PM me those materials as well? Thanks!
I'm interested as well, thanks a bunch
Please PM email addresses, primers are too big for attaching in PMs

Energy trading in North America - Primers? (Originally Posted: 06/10/2014)
Does anyone know any good places or have any primers related to energy trading in North America? Really trying to build some foundation on this subject.
Thanks in advance.
bump, im very interested as well
Energy Trading and Investing by Davis Edwards serves as a good primer and covers jsut about all tradable assets/financial contracts utilized in the energy trading space. Oil 101 is a good one as well and focuses more solely on oil trading as the name suggests. Iris Mack has also published a good book on the subject, Energy Trading and Risk Management. You can read the reviews to see which one fits best with what you are looking for. These are all full lengths books so its quite a bit more depth than say an S&P Platts primer, but all are good reads to build a solid knowledge base in both physical and financial energy trading.
If you're interested in the physicals space, Oil Trading Manual by Elsevier Science & David Long (correct me if I'm wrong) is an invaluable source. It'll tell you all about logistics & contracts, sourcing, hedging, different instruments, Insurance and risk management, etc etc. You can find it on Scribd. Not too expensive if you just start a membership and read it in 3 months. Though you'll have to do a bit of updating yourself on the new regulations, pipelines, access etc. I was able to have an intelligent conversation with a board member and trader of an O&G company thanks to this book and investing/trading in the energy space.
could you recomend any solar energy primers?
