It's not atypical. Fidelity is a great shop with a strong reputation. If you do your analyst stint there, make some good connections, and get some strong recommendations, you can go to H/W/S for b-school (providing you have a good undergraduate degree, 700+ on the GMAT, and some interests outside of work). And equity research is the ideal background for moving to a fundamental equity long-short fund, so your career plan is plausible.

 

Is it possible that some people work 3,4 yrs in ER at a reputable buyside shop and transit straight to a hedge fund, WITHOUT bis school?

I really really don't want to go back to school. I'd rather study for CFA and stuff...
