Finance Networking Events in NYC

Hey All:

I work at a private equity firm in CT and I was wondering if you had advice about connecting with other investment professionals in NYC. Are there networking events/societies/associations that you would recommend?

Thanks...

My experience has been that these sorts of events tend to be horrible. It's a combination of people looking for jobs, people looking to sell you things/services, people from family Asset Management offices masquerading as PE or HF tycoons, etc.

What is your goal in going to these events? Whatever it is, there is almost certainly a better way to achieve it than these events.

Hey,

My goal of networking is for a few reasons. First, I work at a small PE shop in CT so I do not have the access to people/ideas that I would get at a larger shop. I would like to branch out my firm as well so that we can have access to opportunities in all facets of the industry. I think I would gain a lot of knowledge this way as well as prepare for a rainy day in the future.

My experience has been that the more people you know/learn from/hang out with, the better off everyone will be.

when I was working out of my BBs NYC office, networking came through going out with people from your group, which is how you meet people from your building, then you go out with them, meet their friends from other companies. Then start attending investment conferences, charity events, etc. Eventually you run into people you went out with, they introduce you to more people,,,etc. After about a year or so of doing this a lot you will have a pretty decent network going. Just make sure you present yourself as likeable and not annoying.

oh and as far as being "likeable". This is very easy if you just follow a few rules.

 1. Don't pretend to know things you really aren't that knowledgeable about.
 2. Do not get college drunk.
 3. Don't hit on other people's girls.
 4. Remember people's names (you would be surprised at how often this happens, it took me a while to get good at this)
 5. Don't over exaggerate anything about anything. (people in NYC are from all walks of life and chances are if you talk about how you stayed at X hotel in Sichuan province and ate at a restaurant in the lobby when you really just read about it on the internet, chances are someone will eventually call you out because they have been to X hotel)

Two and Four tie in together. Hedge Four with Two. Drink only to the limit where you don't forget names. Once you start forgetting names, that means you need to drink less next time.
