UK International Students IBD recruiting
Hey guys,
I am looking to apply to Masters in Finance programs at schools such as LSE and Oxford. I was wondering how has IBD recruiting for international students been affected as a result of the changes in the UK immigration policy. Are BB's reluctant to consider international students now and what about MM/boutiques. Also, if I were to apply for a summer analyst position before my course starts in fall of 2013, would banks be willing to consider me given that I am not a U.K. citizen?
Cheers.
I have a friend who was hired from Moscow to BB IB front office, so it is doable. But by and large, people are mostly hired for previous experience (internships / full-time roles alike) and native proficiency in foreign language. There are plenty of qualifying professionals with that and a work permit.
Thus, you have to be exceptional (like really extraordinary, not in your delusions of grandeur) to be sponsored these days.
Where are you from? I would say that the majority of investment bankers in BBs in London are not U.K. citizens. If you are from the EU, it's no problem at all. If you are from overseas it might be a different issue.
I am not from the EU - I am Indian citizen. I had heard that under the new visa regime, work visas are mainly issued for some selected technical roles such as an actuary.
I was also wondering if BB's actively recruit non-U.K. students for international locations such as Singapore and HK from top universities in the UK..because of these visa issues. Was also thinking if I would face similar issues for summer analyst positions (before I start my degree).
bump
Been wondering the same thing. I guess UK schools aren't an option anymore.
Yes seems so but I am wondering if banks have started actively recruiting for international locations to overcome this issue...keen to know what has the experience of wso members been.
Finding an IB job in the UK post masters as an international student (Originally Posted: 07/11/2011)
If I go to a school like the LSE for post graduate study - how easy will it be to find an IB job in the UK as an international student? Anyone who has successfully gotten placement in the UK, could you please let me know of your experiences during the job search?
Just fyi, I am an American citizen with native-level English skills.
Thanks!
put it this way: you'll have a direct shot (e.g. invited to interviews), albeit with a lot of very good competition.
LSE is a target so the opportunities will be there. The issue is at the moment the UK is is legislating which makes it more difficult for international students to find work there. I think the positive would be that the presence of American banks in London is huge so potentially you would be able to transition back to the US or the option gives you a further opportunity.
Network your ass off. LSE has tons of graduate programs, whose cohort's ultimate aim is IB. So competition is fierce.
Good luck.
UK sucks, bro. Come back to America...
I have heard that people mostly end up going back to their home countries.. In your case, since things are picking up in the States, my sense is it would essentially make no difference.
Job prospects for international students in UK (Originally Posted: 03/30/2013)
hi all, I have recently received an offer to study MFin at the University of Cambridge. By qualification, I am an MBA and have been working since 2010 with a multinational bank in India. My GRE score (V- 165/170, Q- 168/.170, AW 4.0) I intend to work in London/ NY after graduation, but have heard that it' becoming next to impossible for international students to find jobs in London. Given that I have a hefty loan to pay if I take up this course, it's crucial for me to find immediate employment.
Do share your feedback on this. Thanks in advance
It's not impossible to find a job in London, but it's definitely a lot harder now, especially in finance.
IB job prospects in London are always shit, regardless of your university
