UK International Students IBD recruiting

Hey guys,

I am looking to apply to Masters in Finance programs at schools such as LSE and Oxford. I was wondering how has IBD recruiting for international students been affected as a result of the changes in the UK immigration policy. Are BB's reluctant to consider international students now and what about MM/boutiques. Also, if I were to apply for a summer analyst position before my course starts in fall of 2013, would banks be willing to consider me given that I am not a U.K. citizen?

Cheers.

I have a friend who was hired from Moscow to BB IB front office, so it is doable. But by and large, people are mostly hired for previous experience (internships / full-time roles alike) and native proficiency in foreign language. There are plenty of qualifying professionals with that and a work permit.

Thus, you have to be exceptional (like really extraordinary, not in your delusions of grandeur) to be sponsored these days.

I am not from the EU - I am Indian citizen. I had heard that under the new visa regime, work visas are mainly issued for some selected technical roles such as an actuary.

I was also wondering if BB's actively recruit non-U.K. students for international locations such as Singapore and HK from top universities in the UK..because of these visa issues. Was also thinking if I would face similar issues for summer analyst positions (before I start my degree).

LSE is a target so the opportunities will be there. The issue is at the moment the UK is is legislating which makes it more difficult for international students to find work there. I think the positive would be that the presence of American banks in London is huge so potentially you would be able to transition back to the US or the option gives you a further opportunity.

Network your ass off. LSE has tons of graduate programs, whose cohort's ultimate aim is IB. So competition is fierce.

Good luck.
