How do I take this?

I've been in discussions about a consulting position. I had my telephone interview and did very well in it. HR mentioned they want to take me forward and meet the hiring manager so good news.

BUT, she said that there are 3 stages and some candidates are already on Stage 3. Although she didnt outright say it but I'm thinking they're likely to make an offer to someone. Point is they want to interview me still. So I'm a little confused. They have 4 people on Stage 3. Me on Stage 1.

Is there any point interviewing? How likely (in your experience if faced with such an issue) is it that I'll move onto actually onto the next stage?

The real issue I have is that the interview will involve significant travel for me to get there and I really dont have the cash to put myself up in a hotel (firm doesnt offer this) to find out I never stood a chance with the position anyway.

Since they're not offering travel, take that as a signal... If they thought to themselves, "this is our guy!" They would've booked it or offered reimbursement.

You just need to make the choice if it's worth $X00 to potentially network with 3-5 people.

***Edit. Also, if it were the hiring mgr asking you to come out... that would carry more weight than HR asking you to come out.

I'll do what I can to help ya'll. But, the game's out there, and it's play or get played.

Thanks. I just checked with the HR lady again and they havent actually paid for anyone to travel in. Its a pretty reputable firm (think Roland Berger) so surprised but feel no better as I think people on the final stage are likely to get the job.
