Can an Internship in operations benefit IBD
I am in my first year of a four year finance and economics course, I have applied for an Internship in the Operations department at Morgan Stanley. I am unsure if this will be any benefit to me as I want to become an Investment Banker, hopefully in M&A, So I am just curious to find out if this internship can help me in any way?
I know a lot of monkeys who worked in ops at a BB then networked into the IBD recruiting process later on- one of many common paths.
Even janitor at GS/JPM/MS level banks can land you in M&A/IBD depending on where you work
What it will help you do is gain experience, network, and leverage. It will not give you the experience where someone from IBD will see this as a direct line into IBD. If this is your first internship, take it. When I was in your position, I had 5 internships. The reason I got them was because I used each one as leverage into the next. If you have nothing else, take it and network your ass off.
Agree with other posters; this will not be an experience that makes your CV stand out from other (except the brand name probably).
But this will allow you to network with people from IBD and get yourself on their radar for future positions (by networking and building good rapport). If this is your only offer, you should definitely take it.
thanks guys, the advice you've given me means so much to me.
Converting Operations Spring Internship into IBD SA? (Originally Posted: 03/19/2016)
Hi guys,
I have recently accepted an offer from BB to join their Spring programme in Operations (initially I applied to IBD, however, HR decided to transfer my application). At the end of the programme we will be assessed and considered for the 2017 summer internship in the respective department (Operations in my case).
Having in mind that I have already completed 3 banking internships (6 months in total) and currently work as an analyst at a boutique in my home country, operations do not entertain me at all. However, I come from a complete non-target and therefore I do not expect to interview with a ton of firms during the SA recruitment period in Fall.
Now, does anyone have an idea if it is both possible and appropriate to ask to be considered for a SA position in another department (IB) at the end of the Spring programme? If yes, how and when shall I approach the HR regarding this?
Thanks!
network as much as possible i did the move but it was from DCM to IBD
I did an Ops Internship in the fall, as mentioned above, network everyday. If the program is at the same BB I was in you should not have any issues networking internally especially since you already have IB internship experience. Also, make sure you don't discuss you're goals of getting in IBD with your Ops team.
And yes, towards the end of the program you can speak to HR about what your true interests are, in terms of when I told them around a month (estimate) before the end of the internship. I set up a 1 on 1 with the HR manager who was in charge of the group. During the conversation, I was just honest and said I enjoyed the experience, really wanted to be a part of the firm, but Operations was not the best fit and said if it would be possible to be considered for IB etc.
Best of luck, pm if you have other questions.
How relevant would an Operations/Strategy/Marketing Internship be for IB SA Recruiting? (Originally Posted: 04/25/2016)
How relevant would an internship like this be? I have been told that the job will involve digital marketing, Salesforce CRM optimization, lead generation, Software-as-a-Service performance metrics reporting, and market research. This is mainly an internship for a company that was just bought by a private equity firm.
Thanks!
