If you have a genuine reason for calling them and that you clearly state it it's not awkward. I'd say it's even easier to stay focused and lead the interview, since you can have all you want written down, especially a long list of question so the conversation isn't stalling. Usually I cold email first to ask for the interview, when they reply you know they're fully expecting the call.

 

Just be calm, cool, and collected. Prep yourself before dialing and start things off as conversational as possible. At the end of the day, they're humans and have a life outside of the office. If you can realize that, you'll be golden and it will cut a lot of the edge off in those calls.
