How to network for bizdev purposes when in finance?

I'm an incoming analyst at an MF in RE. As a non-target, I networked my ass off to get this seat. It consisted of me doing a lot of cold emails and reaching out on LinkedIn to learn about their careers and companies, before asking about recruitment.

I fully understand how beneficial networking can be and want to continuously grow my network organically (through work, deals, company/ industry conferences, etc.) and inorganically (reaching out on your own).

However, I'm feeling a little lost on how I should approach networking as an industry professional. A few questions:

1) What sort of questions do you ask to get them talking? Is it similar to what I did as a student (career, company, what you want)?

2) Also, how would you suggest reaching out to someone when you don't really have something you want (like a job, a deal, capital, etc.), but you want to talk to them because they seem interesting and want to grow your network?

This is what sort of confuses me as a senior student and going into the industry as an Analyst. I want to continue to grow my rolodex. Who knows when you will need someone when you want a deal done, raise capital for a fund/ company, etc. and it's better to have a warmer connection.

But I don't need a job right now and I'm not in a senior needing to develop/originate business. So I want to know how to reach out to someone without them thinking that they are wasting their time speaking to me if I'm not looking for a job etc.
