IE vs EDHEC Master in Finance

Hi guys,

I would need a little bit of help deciding whether to choose IE or EDHEC. Which school is better in finance?

I know that IE is ranked highly at Financial Times, but I don't even see EDHEC's finance programme on the list.
On the other hand, I was told that EDHEC is one of the best French business school, especially in finance (considering their vast experience at their Risk Institute).

My aim is to work in corporate finance or auditing after graduation.

So basically, my question is whether EDHEC or IE has better finance programmes?

Thank you very much for your answers in advance, it is much appreciated!

Cheers!

Hi,

Thank you very much for your response!

I live and work in Peru, but after graduation I would like to move to Europe, preferably to Spain or to the UK. I wish to work in the finance department of a large corporation (preferably hospitality, transport or telecommunication).

One more question, in your opinion, in which aspects (apart from placement) has IE a better finance programme? Faculty/internationality/course structure?

Thank you very much in advance for you time!

Hey,

I have some problems with EDHEC. It sounds like a good school. However, you will be competing with people from HEC and Essec, which are more recognized school in France and Europe in general. Hence, knowing that you probably don't speak a perfect french, you will have some trouble competing against them.

I would go for IE.

LDNBNKR:
If you want to work in london, you are ok (not great) but ok with both. I would argue for IE because of the stronger MBA program

LDNBNKR can you give some insight into how other continental European business schools place for getting jobs in London, particularly after Finance Masters degrees. As I understand it, HEC Paris, Bocconi, SSE, St Gallen and RSM are often referred to as being the top schools. Is this correct in your experience?

petit079: you are comparing bananas and apples. EDHEC is by far a better school of finance than IE. Determine your objective: what do you want? You want to study in France but moving to Spain or UK, or you would stay in France? Do not make things complicated.

Let's say you want to study finance and work in France - > choose EDHEC This the best school at the moment in France, with top faculty in corporate finance. They have 5 campi: Paris (in the middle of banks), London, SIngapur, Nice and Lille. Don't be afraid of elitist in France, I have studied in HEC and we are afraid of seeing how many EDHEC stundets are getting lots of positions in Finance.

You want to work in London? Sorry but you don't have any idea. It's not so easy study in one country and find a job in the other. If your final target is Londo, go to study directly in London.

What is the point in going to Spain in the middle of the worst crisis they have ever passed? Look at the unemployment rate, it's crazy. You won't get a job even if you are coming the most expensive executive MBA at IE. Be careful with this option, good luck!

kingy950: Keep in mind that entering the job market in London is extremely difficult for those who don't hold a EU passport. I mean for non-europeans students who study a master in Europe (continental countries) and tries to get a position in London -> is almos impossible, it doesn't matter the name/ranking of any school. However there's a way to skip all those complicated immigration procedures to get a job permit, you go and study in London directly, as a student you will be allowed to look for a job and change the visa status. Good luck!

If you intend to do your career in the francophone world, ignore the ranking and do IE, which will place you squarely (almost) within the French elite and its connections. It's not as good as the "proper" IE Grande Ecole but the name opens doors and you will be around them, useful for when they are running the CAC 40.

Hi petit079, be careful with your choice if you are holder of a passport from a country outside Europe. It won't be easy to study in Spain and get a job permit in France. The elite is hiring 99% people who followed French education.

Take into account the chance to improve your language skills, and adding French in your CV. I know EDHEC is providing all their students with French courses.

Hope this info is useful.

Cheers

My aim is IBD/PE in London/Milan and I just accepted EDHEC's grande ecole course: Master in management and MSc corporate finance. I visited the school and the institution seems serious, professional, and with great structures. What made me want to go to edhec?

  • expertise/reputation to teach finance

  • last year's class employability 3 months after end of course: 95%

  • average starting salary $56k

  • top employers hired students of 2011 class (all the big banks)

  • apparently places quite well in london/canary wharf - 30% of students of 2011 class were placed outside france, most of these in london

  • 50 firms/banks careers fair in nice campus in september

  • 120 firms/banks career fair in paris campus in january

  • unique opportunity to live in such location for 2 years (I love sailing/watersports)

Frank90: Just be careful, EDHEC is pretty good in Finance, but it's not the panacea. At the end it will be you applying and getting the position, not only a brandname in your CV.

Hi,

I'd say that it really depends where you want to work after. EDHEC is less well-known in Europe than IE, but has an excellent reputation in France. If you are fluent in french (like native speaker level) and determined to work in France, then EDHEC will be great. On the other hand, if you want to work in Europe (excl. France) then the choice (reputation vs. program cost) is more complicated.

Hi,

Generally I would like to work in Marketing, preferably in the consumer goods or luxury goods industry. I cannot specify yet in which country I would like to work in, however i do not speak French. The master's degree would be in English too.

I know that the tuition fees make the choice hard, which is why I am doubting whether I should consider IE.

Another option I am taking into account is the MSC in Marketing Management at Grenoble School of Business. However so far what I have heard, is that EDHEC has a better reputation than GGSB. Or do you think a more specified degree is the better option?

Let me know what you think! :)

Thanks in advance!

While IE is better than EDHEC, it's definitely not worth a 20k premium.

If I were you, I'd take EDHEC, take the gap year option and do internships at french corporates. It should position you well for both france and EU regardless of your french level.

BTW, EDHEC >>> Grenoble. Inspite of EDHEC being labeled a finance school, it still has much higher brand value, something french care about a lot
