If I STILL don't have a summer internship...?
... and I'm a junior?
I actually have an internship at a small bank right now going until end of May (or maybe beginning of June) that might be extended depending on how the firm's doing at that time. I'm not really expecting it to extend though. I'm still in the recruiting process for an asset manager in Asia, but I will only find out about this internship in May. Obviously didn't get a big name offer.
I am for now going to apply for all the jobs that get posted on the career center job board, but I'm not sure if it would be pretty much impossible to get a summer internship in NYC through cold emailing/calling/etc. at this point. I prefer IB but pretty much any other types of just plain old finance would be good. I'd like to stay out of corporate finance though just because I don't like or know very much about accounting.
I'm also a computer science double major so at this point I'm contemplating whether I should just drop finance for this summer and go for programming internships, since those are easier to come by these days.
Do you go to school in NYC? I go to school in Philly and last summer as a sophomore ended up landing a PE internship in late April from a small shop who told one of my professors they were looking to hire one student for the summer. Around that same time I got a few calls from other small shops in the area all looking for interns who never got around to hiring anyone because they had been too busy during the winter and spring.
I remember a few of the positions were pretty good that some of the firms were looking to fill. Targeting these types of places not in NYC would probably be your best bet for a still respectable finance internship. These firms also never posted on our school job boards, so all communication was done through connections or online applications. Best of luck with your search, you still have time.
Good to see another Philly guy in here! OP, there are tons of smaller places looking for interns (speaking of NYC/Philly firms, Janney Montgomery Scott comes to mind).
Yes, I am in NYC. I was mainly wondering if most boutiques already have filled intern positions by now.
It's March 27th. Summer is months away... cold call, network, etc. There's a ton of opportunities still out there.
