Does anyone know what the general/organic career progression is for an investment manager research analyst?

What kind of firm? Generally, people just stay in the field and get more coverage areas or ones with a bigger impact. It does vary somewhat depending on where you are doing it. The skill set is not very transferable to many other types of jobs.

also interested in the original question. would HF analyst be an easy exit option for IM researchers? seems like the work should be similar. but other than that is a MBA the only way to transition out of the profession if you are not into the volatility of the public market?

Its an investment consulting firm. That has a few other business units.

HF analyst is not an easy
HF analyst is not an easy exit opp as the jobs are no way similar. Researching a fund/manager is nowhere near as rigourous as security selection (what you'd do at a hedge fund). An MBA or another grad program is usual the only way to make this switch.
If we're talking Cambridge
If we're talking Cambridge associates or similar, (not investment consulting arm of MSSB/BAML etc...), then move to FoF might be possible. HF analyst role is very different and rigorous as mentioned above.
However, if you work for an arm like MS AIP for example, then its possible.
Yeah I'm curious about this
Yeah I'm curious about this too. I have an opportunity at an AM firm for this position
