Job Change Suggestions
I've been working at a hedge fund for ~5 years now primarily in an FP&A type of role. There's not much in terms of growth opportunities, so it's time to figure out my next steps. I'm not an accountant and don't want to be one.
My plan was to look for business school to get into investment banking. Unfortunately, my firm isn't that big of a name and my job doesn't have that 'wow' factor, so I'm not an ideal candidate just yet. More recently, I've also grown more and more interested in S&T (which was originally what I wanted to do before I convinced myself of banking).
I'm curious if anyone can suggest positions I should be considering. Obviously it'd be great to get a jr. trading position, but I'm well aware those don't just get handed out. Here's what I've thought up. Please let me know your thoughts and anything I may have forgotten
- Lateral to a more senior FP&A Role - worry is it's not what I want to do long term and will pidgin hole me.
- Look for Ops type role related to trade settlement - could get me exposure to traders (ours sit on the floor) for networking, but without past experience I worry the position may be junior for me.
- Consulting - I have good connections for a local (NYC), small (read: no name) company. I worry the company being unknown will hurt. I also don't want the travel lifestyle associated with most consulting. This firm is all local, but I'm not sure about exit ops
- Corp Dev - not even sure if I could get a position like this or how to go about it, but could provide good experience and I may actually enjoy this career path. Probably not s&t related at all.
- Other - ???
I wish I could help you choosing the best fit but I l clearly lack the expertise. All the stories I've heard is to go from banking to PE to/or Hedge Fund. I've never heard about the other way around.
