Macro Research????
Hi everyone,
I have an offer for the summer from a top BB to do macro research with the bank's chief economist. Apart from graduate school, what sorts of exit opportunities will I have if I take the job? I was told that moving into rates strategy or mortgage strategy after 2 or so years is an option, but do any of you know how difficult it would be to move into trading? Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't strategists work longer hours than traders and get paid less? Thanks!
You would definitely be well positioned to move to a Macro Hedge Fund as an analyst
you'll have pretty solid exit ops to macro HF's. also grad school if you want. but of course macro HF's are still an exit op after grad school as well.
it's a pretty good position to be in imo.
Thanks for the responses guys. If I think that there's a chance I might be interested in fixed income trading later on, however, would you guys recommend that I do the macro research for two years and then move into trading with a solid understanding of econ or should I just start off in trading immediately?
Sounds like a great gig. Congrats.
if you're end goal is trading, then just do trading now. as a trader, esp in fixed income, you don't have to be a macro guru to be successful. so no need to spend 2 yrs in research.
otherwise, i think macro research 1. builds great fundamentals into your investment ideas and 2. have solid exit ops in terms of grad schools and HF's.
You wouldn't do much or to be more precise any trading as an analyst for the first two years anyway. Research will certainly help you get a better understanding of the market and what drives it
Don't macro HF's also like fixed-income traders? Or would macro research really be better to get into a sweet HF like Soros? I guess my main concern is that I'll be pigeonholed forever as the "research analyst" and won't ever make serious $$
Glad to revive this thread five years later, because now we can now where you exited?
I'm actually more interested though as to what your background was pre-this internship. And what did the day to day work turn out to be like?
Career Advice - Macro Research (Originally Posted: 05/21/2010)
Hi guys,
My goal is to get a job at a macro hedge fund and I wanted to get some advice on my upcoming career move - if that move will help me get the macro hedge fund job a year or so later.
Background: Currently working for a small Asset Management firm (research and portfolio mangement). Previously, have 1 year associate level experience at a BB IBD and I have an MBA from a top-7 business school. Total post MBA experience of only 2 years.
I am planning to take a research job in the BB equity strategy group (macro research) and was wondering if this move will help me in macro hedge fund job search - I believe that curently I am missing substantial macro research experience and this BB experience might help.
Any advice/suggestions are welcome.
Also, what other career exit opportunities exist after BB macro research gig?
Thanks in advance
Bump.
Also, I know the top 5 or so macro funds, but can someone list for me the top say 20 or so?
Thanks!
Macro Research Groups (Originally Posted: 12/13/2010)
My back up plan for trading is to apply to research groups, especially macro ones, I'm not too interested in stocks. For those out there who have to read macro research or create it, which companies generally have the most accurate ideas? This is not exclusive to banks either.
I am interested as well.
Which companies? Which ones (if any) take summer interns, since it is so hard to get into macro/strategy research as a FT, let alone SA...
Most of the big banks have a macro group. ISI usually has interesting research. You'll likely need an econ background (and I dont mean undergrad) to get into a macro group.
Figured as much. So no need for interns whatsoever? Also, what about more macro groups within fixed-income? FX, Interest Rates, Municipal Bonds, etc...
I'm not in macro so I'll leave that to somebody else to answer.
