Macro Research????

Hi everyone,

I have an offer for the summer from a top BB to do macro research with the bank's chief economist. Apart from graduate school, what sorts of exit opportunities will I have if I take the job? I was told that moving into rates strategy or mortgage strategy after 2 or so years is an option, but do any of you know how difficult it would be to move into trading? Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't strategists work longer hours than traders and get paid less? Thanks!

You wouldn't do much or to be more precise any trading as an analyst for the first two years anyway. Research will certainly help you get a better understanding of the market and what drives it

Don't macro HF's also like fixed-income traders? Or would macro research really be better to get into a sweet HF like Soros? I guess my main concern is that I'll be pigeonholed forever as the "research analyst" and won't ever make serious $$

Glad to revive this thread five years later, because now we can now where you exited?

I'm actually more interested though as to what your background was pre-this internship. And what did the day to day work turn out to be like?

I am interested as well.

Which companies? Which ones (if any) take summer interns, since it is so hard to get into macro/strategy research as a FT, let alone SA...

Figured as much. So no need for interns whatsoever? Also, what about more macro groups within fixed-income? FX, Interest Rates, Municipal Bonds, etc...
