MBB: which offices to look at for education and healthcare industries?
Hi WSO,
I'm a newbie MBB hopeful, currently a 4th year PhD student in biomedical engineering. I'm trying to figure out which offices I should be applying to if I wanted to ensure exposure to education and healthcare industries; can somebody help? I did click though a few individual office websites but the descriptions are rather superficial..
Thanks for reading my post!
From what I heard from friends, the office does not matter since you'll most likely only be in the office on Fridays and work at the client from Mon-Thu. So, everyone in the office is off working on their specific projects with the team Mon-Thu and then mind their own business, such as working on research, in their respective offices on Fridays. That might be different depending on which country you're aiming at. I guess talking to HR won't hurt.
Thanks for your comment. I will be applying to offices in the US (though I'm open to hopping over to Europe), and from what I understand, McKinsey has a global staffing model which fits your description while Bain/BCG employ more of a local staffing model, hence the question.
For McK, it doesn't matter as much, but I know the head of the education practice sits in SF and there is some senior leadership in hospital operations sitting in Dallas.
For BCG, Boston is the place to be for healthcare. If you're interested in pharma, then NJ makes a lot of sense, too. And, fortunately for you, BCG hires a ton of science PhDs.
NJ offices of McK and BCG were originally created for the healthcare practice. They are also easier to get into than other offices.
Can't speak to McK/Bain, but the BCG office descriptions on the website do list industry "specialties". That's the best thing to go on for now. You can certainly get into most industries from any office, but it's a bit easier to get staffed on what the partners in your specific office specialize in.
If that doesn't work, look at the websites and see if they list the names of any partners in the office. Checking out their background on LinkedIn could give you a hint as well.
Hey guys, thank you all for your great suggestions. I suppose many offices are involved in pharma/healthcare projects nowadays, but my interest in education sector is equally important. If someone could comment more on offices that do many education-related projects, that'd be much appreciated!
PS. For those of you wondering the same question, I came across this filter/search function on mckinsey web to sort offices by interest, location and size: go to Mckinsey web> career tab > under your career > select our locations.
NY, NJ, BOS
Also Houston for healthcare
health care will be a lot easier than education
Get into the one of the three first, then decide
