Mfg Engineer moving away towards business (application for MBA at NYU)
Hey all,
This is my first post on this website (by the way there is a load of good info here) and basically this is whats happening in my life right now:
I graduated from a state school with a 3.40 GPA in mechanical engineering
worked as an intern for 4 yrs (full time summers/winters, part time fall/spring) in:
quality control systems/engineering
SAP (ERP) master data work
daily management of manufacturing activites as well as troubleshooting defects
manufacturing planning/estimating for New product development
Basically my internship was through an orgainzation named Inroads, and their "mission" is to develop and place talented minority youth in business and industry and prepare them for corporate and community leadership.
Long story short, I did alot of summer workshops focusing on business ethics, writing, you know all that good jazz
Right now I have about 8 months of solid manufacturing engineering experience under my belt (along with the 4 as an intern). I basically manage multiple product lines for part defects, creating processes, and troubleshooting day to day issues on the production floor, as well as resolving supplier/quality issues (lots of social interactions with all facets of our organization as well as outside organizations)
But basically I am prepping for my GMATs and aiming for atleast a 700 as I want to apply to the NYU MBA program (focusing in finance) next fall
My question to you guys/gals is: do I have enough experience (along with some help from my Inroads alum and friends) to get accepted into the MBA program at NYU? The bad part is I will only be 23 when I apply. I know my GMATs need to be in the higher percentile (which is why I am aiming for 700) and I know my drive/background is strong. I just dont know if they will look at my engineering degree + experience and immediately dismiss me.
sorry for the long post.
I would work for at least 1-2 years before applying.
I know you may feel that your internships are like full-time experience -- but no matter how hard of a sell you do, most recruiters will see it as internships.
Even if you could get into a school like NYU, you'll be competing against other folks who will have more years of full-time experience than you, and you will be at a disadvantage. You may feel mature for your age, but many recruiters will simply see you as a kid compared to the other MBA students (who may only be a few years older), but at your stage in life (first few years out of college), an extra year or two of full-time experience can be perceived as a big difference.
I get a sense that you want to go into finance now which is why you want an MBA, but if you want to get into it, you may have to be patient if you see the MBA as the way to get there, or you'll have to hustle for a finance job now and hope that you get lucky (you won't be the only engineer who has switched without an MBA; it's not easy, but it's not impossible either).
