MSF Advice: CMC vs Vandy vs UTexas
I was accepted into all three MSF programs (CMC, Vandy, McCombs) and I am wondering which one I should accept. I know most programs are regional in their placement. My goal would be to obtain an IB offer. I think I have written UTexas off because it is such a new program, but am interested in hearing other opinions on the program.
I believe that CMC has better placement after talking with the adcoms.. Although, Vandy wasn't as open about their placement compared to the others. The problem is that I do not have relevant IB experience, which is almost essential for an IB offer. So, the reason I haven't chosen CMC already is because I know some students at Vandy were able to get an internship during the program to buff their resume. Whereas at CMC I do not believe students did internships during the program.
So I am not sure which program to choose. Vandy and the possibility of an internship or CMC and the stronger placement, but no internship?
Vandy has an internship type program for incoming students. This doesn't necessarily mean you will get it. Without that you are looking at Nashville as a potential internship source.
UTA is a new program and still developing. McCombs is a top business school though and will place well in Texas. I think if you are entrepreneurial and know how to network you should be fine. Right now I don't think the career services office know what to do with MSF students, which hurts those depending on OCR.
Claremont is the best MSF on the West Coast and probably the most selective outside of MIT. Their placements are great and they only admit the best students. Personally, I would choose Claremont.
Vanderbilt has good placements. Mainly MM banking, southern focused. Some NYC for sure. Some BB here and there. I've asked them to put something together for my site, but this is the feedback I have received from current and former students.
Honestly, if you don't choose Claremont then I would leverage the other offers to get money from the schools. The cheaper you can get an MSF the better the ROI. And while I know you want banking, be prepared to cast a wider net. Look at valuation, Big 4 TAS, capital markets, boutique banks, corporate banking, etc. Aim for banking, but also have an eye on positions that have skills which can eventually get you into banking.
I applied and was accepted to CMC and Vandy. I ultimately chose CMC but I think both are great programs and both will give you opportunities to get into banking.
I wouldn't rule out the possibility of interning if you do choose CMC, career services is really good about finding opportunities for you to intern the summer prior to arriving on campus.
PM me if you have questions or want to talk more about the programs.
TNA, do you know anyone who has ever gotten one of Vandy's internships? From talking to current students, it seems like no one has, but I could be wrong.
OP, current students tell me Nashville has little to offer regarding internships. Stephens has ER there, but boutiques are limited. Did you go through CMC's website? I could have sworn I saw a page regarding MAF internships, but I could be mistaken. Vandy places almost exclusively in the South. I think one current student will be starting at Stifel (not sure of the location), but most will be at Stephens or other Southern banks. Past classes included placements at HW (none this year) and Raymond James. Vandy is pretty secretive about their placements (though they have no problem bragging how many of their MBA students got offers from Goldman Sachs).
I would not go to UTA. I thought of applying and even had several alumni ready to write letters of recommendations for me, but their placements were not great (one kid at Goldman Sachs, the rest mostly CF) and this is only their second year. They also have yet to upload those placement statistics, which leaves me with even more doubt.
I will be at Villanova this June. CMC (or MIT) would have been a dream come true, but I did not meet CMC's math requirement, so I never applied. Good luck!
Thank you all for the replies.
CMC does have a page regarding their internships, but the internships are for the summer. I was mainly referring to an internship during the program, as it is too late for summer. I know Vandy doesn't have as big of banking presence in Nashville, but I talked to some students that were able to do an internship in ER during the program. Whereas, at CMC, I haven't heard of anyone doing an internship during the program, and I feel that any relevant experience will benefit me greatly.
Also, the kid that got the GS at Utexas was for an operations role from my understanding, but yea UTexas has a lot of CF. I believe after a few years though it will have much stronger placement in IB.
Where do you want to live/work? CMC hands down for West coast. Vandy for East coast. Texas for Texas.
I wish that UT-Austin would just post their placement numbers, it still says that they are unavailable on the MSF's page.
I've heard the UT stats we're pretty rough. SMU in Dallas has an MSF. That business school has a ton of connections in the DFW area and SMU people are famous for taking care of their own. If your good at networking outside the career center Dallas would be a great place to be. Tons of opportunities in that town.
