New CEO From Different Industry

Doing work on a company that recently brought in a CEO from a completely different industry to lead it through a restructuring.

Granted, the new CEO has led successful turnarounds, but only of companies in the industry he/she has had decades of experience in. I'm trying to get a read on if this is a common / effective strategy or more of a publicity stunt. Anyone know of any success stories and/or failures?
