NYC Brunch Surprise Party Suggestions

Planning a surprise party with about 30 guests for a Saturday afternoon brunch in NYC. The entire crowd will be consultants/bankers, so a classy and somewhat upscale place would be great.

Any suggestions for a good place where we can all socialize together with room to move?

Also--I've never thrown a party at a restaurant before, let alone in NYC, so I'm curious about the standard policies. Will I need to pay to rent out an entire restaurant or a special event fee? Each person will be paying on their own, but I'm assuming I can't just place a reservation for 30... haha

Call a few weeks ahead and you could possibly do it at Norma's (at the Meridien)... I'm not sure if they'd be able to handle a party that big but it's a great brunch spot and fairly upscale.

One step closer, bro...

8+ or 12+ people will be considered private dining and youll be hit with a prix fixe menu and a service charge on top of the included gratuity charge (for clean up and set up, quote unquote). A lot of places will have large places to rent out but if you are going to want basically two rooms -- one for the moving around and hors douevres or whatever... they MIGHT ge gracious and give you another big private party room but they dont want your large group bothering other guests
