PE Recruiting - Top 5 picks

If your seniors don't ask, how do you pop the question of "can you make some calls to your contacts to help place me in PE?"

Secondly, those of you that have been through this at a BB bank... how did it work? Im thinking if all goes as planned my senior will ask me where I want to move, I'll tell him, and he'll make the call for me. The issue is, if I give him a list of my top 5 picks, won't he be hesitant to call all 5 of them (or even more than 1) since if I get more than one offer he will have called in a favor to help place me there, and I declined their offer?

Im afraid Ill tell him my top picks, he'll make a call to #1 on the list to get me an interview and give his recommendation, and think "I did all I could to get him into his #1 pick, my work is done here, its his to lose now." Obviously its a ridiculously competitive and you need to be interviewing at the least 3 or 4 places, and you'll be lucky to get an offer from one.

Thats a tough one dude. I actually saw an analyst do this last year. He got his D and MD to make a few calls to some shops, but he practically nagged them for ONE specific place, which according to him was his "top choice". They had to pull some decent strings to eventually land him an interview there. He did (miraculously) get the offer, and DECLINED. Went to another shop.

Long story short, he burned some major bridges.

I would probably discuss your concerns with your seniors. I'm sure they'll be honest with you. Or...instead of getting only 1 MD to make calls for you, maybe ask 2-3 instead?

Wtf? Who does that? Why didn't he just nag for the shop he eventually picked then?

Last minute change of heart I guess. His reasons were pretty vague.

Reach out to headhunters CPI, SG, Amity, Oxbridge, Dynamics, etc) and drop them your CV if they haven't already asked. As you probably know, they are the gatekeepers. They'll ask for references within your group, so pick a handful of patient MDs and a few associates/VPs who you like to field a few of the headhunter calls. From there, I would wait to see where I got interviews at and then ask those senior guys to put in some calls.

With summer 2012 recruiting underway for 2010 analysts and interviews kicking off in April, when is a good time to approach senior bankers in your group about recommendations and/or setting up interviews? It seems weird approaching them in April/May, when I'm less than a year into my analyst stint, to talk about where I'd like to be summer 2012.

It's weird, but it's the reality of the process unfortunately. If recent cycles are any indication at all, most larger buyout shops will have their classes all signed up by May.
