Prior Experience before Applying to PE
Just got a general question regarding experience prior IB when applying to PE. I’ve previously worked in the BO of a financial institution (internship) before moving to IB post graduation through extensive networking.
Now my question is when I’m considering to applying to PE, on my CV, should I leave in or out my previous back office internship experience? Will this hinder my ability in potentially getting PE interviews since I worked in BO in the past? Or will recruiters/PE firms see it as “this guy will do anything to get what he want” and be seen as advantageous/ and also the more experience the better (even though it's an internship)?
Only reason why I’m asking this question is that I know in the finance realm, generally everyone is pretty conservative so would not normally do things outside the norm and I don’t know whether this may be one of them.
Thanks for the replies/suggestions.
I would leave it if you don't have something better to fill the space with.
On my resume, I have my current role (MM IB) and my two internships from college (PWM and F500 CF). I'm doing PE recruiting right now and not having any issues - 4th (final) round in a couple weeks with a good sized fund. Most of the discussion will be focused on your IB experience anyway, and the BO role will play well in your "tell me a little bit about yourself" or "walk me through your resume" story.
Good luck!
Leave it. As someone who has hired a lot of people over the years, people on WSO place far too much importance on internships once you have your first job. That's not to belittle internships or their importance in landing your first job but a couple of months a couple of internships in the summer are just not going to influence anything if you have 1-3 years of full time applicable experience. Maybe someone from KKR or Blackstone will have a pedigree/prestige pole up their asses and ding you for that but most people will hardly look below full time experience unless a company name catches their eye and they used to work there or know someone there. At least that's my opinion.
