Do whatever makes the resume take up exactly one page, without going too small on the font.
How many of you add an Objective statement? I've heard yes and no.
yes. i think it helps to show your interest in whatever your objective is, esp when there are so many resumes to go through
I think objective statements almost always sound lame and take up valuable space.
The objective statement is stupid.
Objective: To obtain an investment banking analyst position that allows me to leverage my considerable skill set.
How does that tell the resume reader anything they don't already know? Obviously you want the analyst gig - you submitted your resume for it.
All it does is provide you the opportunity to sound like a pompous ass. And waste precious space.
free up that space, put in some interesting, value-added and eye-crabbing shit.
LOL @ "valuable space"
For some other jobs, perhaps they are valuable. For banking and PE/HF don't put one on.
Do NOT put an objective statement.
While attending a resume workshop at my school, 1" margins were recommended. However, I think that is too much space to go unused. In fact, I just reduced my margins to .25" on each side, which is probably the minimum for most laser printers. And it's best to leave out an objective, it's pretty pointless.
no objective statement; replace it with Personal Interests. It will give you something OTHER THAN banking, academics, previous experiences to talk about. Make it an activity that the interviewer can relate to, such as travel, a sport, etc.
Not claiming to have the official answer here, but I print with .5" margins (both for top/bottom and for sides) on pretty much everything (e.g., docs in Word, models in Excel).
Any thing higher takes up too much of the page's space, and any thing lower can cause problems for older printers (no idea why this happens, though).
Resume format problems--SA applications (Originally Posted: 01/10/2010)
I have a superday coming up with a BB in NYC and have not yet submitted the online application (got the first round through networking), however they require it before I can move ahead with the process. The problem is, when I try and upload my resume into their online system it messes up the format by shrinking the margins back to what I take as standard size. This causes a few sentences to run onto the next line, and makes the resume about 1.25 pages long.
I have sent my resume to the recruiter separately for the first round, however do you think the interviewers will download my resume in this weird format for the superday? I would change it but I'm worried that they might be able to download it in the original format, even if it is displayed weirdly online.
Does anyone know how this kind of issue usually plays out? Thanks!
Can you submit a PDF?
Nope, it only supports word.
Is it for MS? Don't worry about it.
"Please do not be concerned if your resume/CV has extra line wrapping, as the page is quite slim. Any wrapping issues are caused solely by the width of the Preview page. Your resume/CV will be formatted correctly when reviewed by Morgan Stanley."
