Sales and Trading to Corporate/Business Development

Hi,

I am currently approaching end of my 2 year analyst program within Sales and Trading at a BB - currently within sales

I've decided that banking/s&t isn't something I see myself doing after this program. I would like to work for a corporate within strategy. I'm not that set on it being a large/small company but more focused on the group.

I'm not sure how to go about recruiting for this and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or ideas about next steps for someone in my position.

Thanks.

I started out as an Analyst in a MM IB firm, deciding I wanted to stay on as an Associate, and then quickly realized I wanted to get out and find a corporate development role. It took me close to a year to end up where i did (largely because I was focused on staying in my former city for the first 6 months or so, and was very picky with what type of group I wanted to join). A few tips:

1) You're at a bit of a disadvantage coming from S&T, however, it's not impossible to overcome especially if you are doing equity sales. I'm not sure how quick you are looking to get out, but a possible interim step for you could be to move into equity research at your firm if that is possible, especially if you have a solid analytical background and a sector interest 2) You'll have to be pro-active in seeking out roles as there really aren't any headhunters that I could find that are dedicated to Corp Dev. There are definitely regional headhunters who will get Corp Dev mandates, so I would try to find a few in your city that currently have mandates or have had them in the past and build a relationship with them. You can ask them how frequently they get these roles and if their major clients may have openings in the near future. 3) Create an RSS or similar feed with the major job sites, especially indeed.com, linkedin etc. I have no idea what % of corp dev opportunities you will cover with this, but there are no shortage of corp dev roles on these sites 4) Be flexible in your geography. Unless you are absolutely tied to your current city, if you really want to break into corp dev, you need to be prepared to move anywhere in the country. 5) Network as much as you can. I'm not sure how it works with sales/research, but try to attend any conferences your research department puts on where there will be senior execs from sectors you are interested in. You never know what could come out if it
