Calling bullshit. No way does someone ask you to stand up at the end of a skype interview.

If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses - Henry Ford

That's when you look the interviewer square in the eyes and say, "I can't. I'm paralyzed from the waist down."

Talk about guaranteeing a job offer (Granted you'll have to show up in a wheelchair everyday for as long as you work there).

"I know you think you understand what you thought I said but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."

Notice how you wrote Skype INTERVIEW? What do you wear for an interview? A full suit and tie. That's it. Do you think that just because they don't want to pay and waste money to fly you out that it's no longer important?

Kids these fukin days.... No common sense and looking to meet the lowest common denominator.

@"CreditAnalyst85", I just did not want to over dress. This is for a CA based job.

Have you ever heard of someone NOT getting a job offer at a professional job because they wore a suit? (Not including rampant speculation coming from high schoolers and college kids that have no experience outside academia?)

I have had interviews where the other person was wearing a polo.

What does the interviewer wearing a polo have anything to do with what you wear? Andmore importantly how does your statement address my question in any way? if you're interviewing, you are to dress professionally to mke a good impression. Don't know how it works in other countries, but in the US, you dress according to the interview rules for professional careers.

Are you people brain dead? Why are you looking for loop holes or ways to argue the facts? Wear a full suit, period, stop the back and forth, there is nothing to discuss.

Jesus this is why this generation has so many problems.

At my university there was a guy who showed up to MSFT interviews with jeans and what appeared to be a a ski cap. Every company is different. Also, the west coast is much more casual than NE.

I know of someone who showed up to a interview at a HF in CA in a business suit. Unfortunately the HF was very casual, sandals/shorts/jeans/tshirts casual, the interviewer asked the candidate why he didn't clarify what the dress code was before the interview.. They were not offered a position.

Are you saying he didnt get the offer BECAUSE he wore a suit? How would you know that? Was he stellar otherwise?

I don't know why the offer was not extended. What I was trying to say is 1) best to do your homework before the interview. I never liked seeing someone from outside the organization either undressed - very bad, or overdressed - not bad. 2) you want to fit in to the culture, I could see how an interviewer could judge a candidate for being to stiff etc.. or not serious enough.. based on how they dress.

Funny you say that. I had a buddy (4.0 at Harvard) who had a phone screen and the interviewer Facetime called him. Needless to say, he was not wearing a suit and did not get the offer.

Dress as you would if you were there in person. Most likely it's during the day and your interviewer will be in business dress as well. Tie maybe not necessary?

Tri_OptimumI'd also recommend taping some square root tables/anything else to aid mental math calculations to the wall behind your computer, given what I've heard from my friends who have had skype interviews for trading.
I'm in the process of interviewing with a firm in NYC. I had to do mental math, probability, and logical reasoning problems so far. I wonder if it will be similar.

It's a prop trading firm in Chicago. These places tend to be casual dress. I wonder if I'll be overdressed if I wear a suit. I guess it's more understandable to be overdressed though.

This.

I actually had a friend get asked to stand up during a Skype interview since the running joke is that people just dress up their top half and wear underwear/pj's. That could have been awkward.. haha.

This is actually a fantastic question.

If it's Spot I'd just wear nothing though.

Why the fuck wouldn't you dress up? also have tabs open with relavent info and resources on. Skirrt

An interview is an interview no matter how it is conducted. Always dress up, even for a phone interview. It puts you in the right frame of mind.

I did a few Skype interviews this year since I've been abroad. It seems like you can't go wrong with a full suit. Also, make sure your stuff is working properly beforehand, and speak clearly. Video conferencing is definitely not ideal but you can still make the most out of it by making sure everything is technically sound.

I had someone from a BB IBD (internship position) Skype me informally to make sure I wasn't some "crazy mass-murderer." Those were his exact words haha, since I got the interview through a connection. But you get the point though. They probably just want to make sure you are who you claim to be before they go head on into the process.

I hope that helps and best of luck!

I've heard of this happening more and more, and its definitely just to make sure you are presentable. Usually the whole thing is Skype though, but I suppose maybe your interviewer doesn't want to have to deal with it being a little harder to hear/understand during most of your conversation.

Suit for sure or at least rock the sportscaster suit on top/shorts on the bottom

Only wear a suit jacket, shirt, and tie. When the interview is over, stand up, drop your LSD (little swinging dick) on the table and say, "just think about how big we could make this. Together."

Sexual innuendo + BSD reference = job offer.
